Justice Department deems New York City, Portland and Seattle 'anarchist jurisdictions'

The Justice Department released a list of cities Monday that it has deemed "anarchist jurisdictions" under President Donald Trump's instructions this month to review federal funding for local governments in places where violence or vandalism has occurred during protests.

That memo directed Attorney General William Barr, in consultation with Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought and acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf, to identify jurisdictions "that have permitted violence and the destruction of property to persist and have refused to undertake reasonable measures to counteract these criminal activities (anarchist jurisdictions)."

On Monday, the Justice Department labeled New York City, Portland, Oregon, and Seattle as such areas. It said it was still working to identify other jurisdictions that meet the criteria outlined in Trump's memo. The president has made ridicule of those cities a regular feature of his campaign appearances, and he has mocked their top officials for their responses to the violence that has taken place during the protests.

Barr said in a statement accompanying the announcement: "We cannot allow federal tax dollars to be wasted when the safety of the citizenry hangs in the balance. It is my hope that the cities identified by the Department of Justice today will reverse course and become serious about performing the basic function of government and start protecting their own citizens."

It seems they're looking at other areas as possible "anarchist jurisdictions."

As part of its rationale for labeling the cities, the Justice Department cited city councils' voting to cut police funding, the refusal to prosecute protesters on charges like disorderly conduct and unlawful assembly, the rejection of federal intervention, and injuries suffered by law enforcement officials during violent outbursts.

This may be another attempt to withhold funding from the cities in question.

New York Attorney General Letitia James said in a statement Monday that Trump is "using the last few months of his presidency to sow more chaos, more hatred, and more fear," and she pledged to defeat the administration in court over any such withholding of funding to the city and the state.

"This designation is nothing more than a pathetic attempt to scare Americans into voting for a commander-in-chief who is actually incapable of commanding our nation," she said, adding that Trump "should be prepared to defend this illegal order in court, which hypocritically lays the groundwork to defund New York and the very types of law enforcement President Trump pretends to care about."

Democratic mayors and governors this month bashed Trump over his latest effort aimed at what he calls "Democrat-run" cities and states. They said that it was illegal for the executive branch to unilaterally withhold funding from their jurisdictions and that Trump was merely seeking another distraction from the U.S. coronavirus death toll, which has topped 200,000.

I fear civil war is on the horizon as the confederacy makes a comeback. May he who is without sin (democracy, as it is our form of law and morality) cast the first stone.

People believing the cities are overrun with violence, as we have seen here on RF despite the evidence that shows the violence is greatly.over exaggerated.
Perhaps the exaggeration is on the viewer end rather than
from the source. So it could range from ignoring it to excusing
it to correctly grokking it to imagining it as worse than it is.
The upshot....
You're right for some, but not for all.

And its another example of why what the president says matters. It doesn't matter who's in office, people will take to heart what the person in the Oval Office tells them. It's now manifesting in a rejection of early and mail in votes. The Orange "goddamn idiot" is is and has caused extensive damage to the point many may outright reject the election results if Trump loses. Trump goes away, but the cancer remains.

It's a really interesting tactic.
I'm curious where it will lead.
Now, if Trump tries to take funding away from the cities, the cities may have to fund themselves. Do you know what's in New York that could be fleeced with some extra taxes?

Maybe Trump learned a thing or 2 from Kim...on how to becomeplay "God"
In the Trump administration's never-ending quest to distract, infuriate, and confuse the American people, the Department of Justice announced in a memo on Monday that New York City, Portland, and Seattle would officially be deemed “anarchist jurisdictions.”

What is the point of assigning this definitely not-made-up term to these three cities?
Basically, pettiness, with a little bit of racism thrown in. The DOJ claims that they made this decision in direct response to increased “violence and destruction of property" within these cities, specifically following this summer's Black Lives Matter demonstrations.

Essentially, then, each location risks losing different levels of federal funding because its residents didn't want statues honoring racist leaders to remain in place.
It doesn't hurt that all three cities have Democratic leadership and majority Democratic populations, making them unimportant to Trump as he makes his re-election bid.

Why Are These Cities Now Called "Anarchist Jurisdictions"? Racism.

Trump Tower?

I'm not a fan of big cities needing federal funds.
Why should the rest of us subsidize their lavish
ways when they don't pay enuf tax to cover'm?

Perhaps these cities and their states, (and let’s throw in Los Angeles/California along with Chicago/Illinois) while we’re at it should stop sending their tax monies to the federal government, so that they can finance things the way they want to.
Let’s see how all the red welfare GOP states fare without blue Dem productive states supporting them.

Is president Chump purposely fomenting calls for Civil War because he is evil?
Or is it just accidental because he’s an unmitigated idiot?

No. There is no 3rd choice.

I don't know exactly how taxes are drawn from and distributed to certain areas but my guess is that most cities generate more taxes than they get subsidies.
Especially New York has not only Trump Tower (which is likely bankrupt anyway) but also Wall Street. Hit all the big corporations with a special tax and Trumps donors and business partner will explain to him how reciprocity works.

It's not just the city.....

Dear Red States,
We've decided we're leaving. We intend to form our own country, and we're taking the other Blue States with us.
In case you aren't aware, that includes Hawaii, Oregon, California, New Mexico, Washington, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois and all the Northeast.
We believe this split will be beneficial to the nation, and especially to the people of the new country that includes Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam and Washington D.C.
We also get the vast majority of the major shipping ports. So good luck with getting goods in or out of the country affordably.
We also get Costco, Starbucks and Boeing. You get Texas, Oklahoma and all the slave states.
We get stem cell research and the best beaches.
We get the Statue of Liberty. You get Branson, Missouri.
We get Intel, Apple and Microsoft. You get WorldCom.

We get 85 percent of America's venture capital and entrepreneurs. You get Mississippi.
We get two-thirds of the tax revenue; you get to make the red states pay their fair share.
Since our aggregate divorce rate is 22 percent lower than the Christian Coalition's, we get a bunch of happier, intact families.

Please be aware that California will be pro-choice and anti-war, and we're going to want all our citizens back from Iraq at once. If you need people to fight, ask your evangelicals. They have kids they're apparently willing to send to their deaths for no purpose, and they don't care if you don't show pictures of their children's caskets coming home.

With the Blue States unified, we will have firm control of 80 percent of the country's fresh water, more than 90 percent of the pineapple and lettuce, 92 percent of the nation's fresh fruit, 95 percent of America's quality wines (you can serve French wines at your state dinners) 90 percent of all cheese, 90 percent of the high tech industry, most of the U.S. low-sulfur coal, all living redwoods, sequoias and condors, all the Ivy and Seven Sister schools -- Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, the Penn, Princeton, and Yale; and Mount Holyoke, Vassar, Smith, Wellesley, Bryn Mawr, Barnard, and Radcliffe colleges; plus UCLA, UCB, Stanford, Cal Tech, University of Michigan and MIT.

With the Red States, on the other hand, you will have to cope with 88 percent of all obese Americans (and their projected health care costs), 92 percent of all U.S. mosquitoes, nearly 100 percent of the tornadoes, 90 percent of the hurricanes, 99 percent of all Southern Baptists, virtually 100 percent of all televangelists, Rush Limbaugh, Alex Jones and Rand Paul.

We get Hollywood and Yosemite, thank you.
Additionally, 62 percent of you believe life is sacred unless we're discussing the death penalty or gun laws, 44 percent say that evolution is only a theory, 53 percent that Saddam was involved in 9/11 and 61 percent of you crazy ******** believe you are people with higher morals then we lefties. (See that part about divorces. ...)

Oh, and you can have all the new COVID-19 cases since you're too dumb and self-centered to wear masks.

Peace out.
We are the people of the Blue States.
