Kali Mata

Hello All,

Does anyone here have experience praying to Kali Mata?

My family learned a while back that She is our Kuldevi (family goddess). I would like to pray to Her but I am afraid to. Is the following mantra "safe" to recite:

Om Jayanti Mangala Kali
Bhadrakali Kapalini
Durga Kshama Shiva Dhatri
Swaaha Swadha Namostute

I am looking for a simple Sattvik mantra. I will also be grateful if you can share any information about her. Thanks!

Ahh another Kali devotee! Nice!
I don’t see anything wrong with the mantra. But I’m not exactly “traditional” so take that with a grain of salt.

Kali Mata is actually transliterated as Kaali Mata in English. Kali is evil (e.g., Kali Yuga, our current age), but Kaali is the Destroyer of Evil. Please do not be afraid of Her. She is only a terror to demons and their machinations. My Guruji used to say, comparing Mata to a feline, "The teeth of the cat are death to the rat... but transportation for the kitten!" Be a kitten, all safe in the Ma's teeth (care). She is the goddess of protection.

Very interesting analogy. Thank you for sharing. I won't be afraid of Kaali Mata.

The mantra is very 'sattvika'. Mother Kali has been your 'Kula Devi' (family deity), so why should one fear the mother who has protected your family for all these generations. Go to the Mother without any hesitation and ask her excuse for not doing it sooner.
BTW, our family deity is Mother Jwala (though, of course, I am an atheist, advaitist).

This translation pops up.

Om. She Who Conquers Over All, All-Auspicious, the remover of Darkness, the Excellent One Beyond Time, the bearer of the Skulls of Impure thought, the reliever of difficulties, loving, forgiveness, supporter of the Universe, take the oblations of the devotee who is one with you, take the oblations ancestral praise, We bow to you.

It’s a bit wordy but my rudimentary knowledge of Sanskrit says this is the gist of it.

Jayanti, victorious.
Mangala, auspicious.
Bhadra, “good”, i.e. benevolent.
Durga, invincible.
Kshama, forgiveness.
Swaha and svadha are chanted during fire oblations.

That’s the gist of it.

Here is Her gayatri mantra.

I chant these along with those of other deities in my (not always) daily puja. I’ve never feared Mother Kālī though I naturally respect and revere Her. I have a short story (yes, it really is short... for me)...

The house we lived in, we’ve since moved, dhanyavad Bhagavan! felt “sick”. There was just something wrong with it. My tulsi plants died, no matter how many times I tried to raise them. She just wouldn’t stay there.

Anyway, the house felt particularly “off” and infected one day. I just had a creepy feeling. I said that’s it, I’ve had enough. I lit some sage and incense, opened the doors and windows, walked around the house with it, ringing my puja bell, and saying “I don’t know or care who or what the **** you are, but if I were you I would haul *** out of here before I call on Kālī Mā to kick your *** into the next dimension. The feeling of creepiness immediately left. :)

Granted, I am a superstitious man, but...

Kapalini, one who uses skull as her cup (after all you are discussing Mother Kali). Dhatri, from Dharana, one who sustains.
Yeah, Jai, what misfortune can stand against Mother Kali? :)
