Trump's Communications Guy Loses It

People tend to lose their capacity to think for themselves when everyone in their bubble is saying more or less the same thing. Hence, so many absurd conspiracy theories gain ground.

Conspiracy theories have now been openly employed as campaign tactics.
That’s an awful frame of reference. It diminishes the office of President and, because it undermines the integrity of the common discourse, it undermines the moral foundation of democracy.

Which is probably legal.

Your words reminded me of this ...
The Simulacra - Wikipedia

Philip K Dick.
It would make a crazy movie. Lots of his books have. This one even has an android POTUS.
Not sure what legality has to do with this. We are entitled to expect a bit more from our public officials than that they merely refrain from illegal behaviour.;)

I don't know the book, I'm afraid. But this Alt-Reality we seem to be getting worries me a lot.

I was being sarcastic, and echoing remarks from Trump about his business practices.

This is no different than dictators do all over the world. There is no essential difference between what the current regime in power in Washington is trying to do and what they do in China, North Korea or any other dictatorship.

There have been 'war games' about nightmare scenarios. What If Trump Loses And Won’t Leave?

Of course the current regime's semi-official press outlet calls this an "anti-trump" group.

So is it time for the left to arm itself with all the arms the law allows and all the ammo to law allows to be ready just in case? Or can we rely on the military because it's not been badly corrupted yet to do what needs to be done?
The difference is that in China, North Korea and other places where dictatorships took hold the populations weren't confident about whether representational governments could work there. They were too demoralized and settled for the strongest leader. We aren't facing that doomsday scenario. This is a population which expects the voting to work, expects the supreme court to work. The military is composed of people also dedicated to this and almost every soldier, pilot, sailor, marine, coast guard, national guard believes in this.

Twilight Hue

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
Yes it is surprising. Very surprising and shocking. There is nothing normal about this.

We expect sane, rational people in senior positions in government: people who also chose their words with care. Especially when their job is communications, for God's sake.

But this administration, uniquely, has worked hard on undermining everyone's frames of reference, making them lose their bearings and, eventually, their grip on reality. "Alternative facts" have been their stock in trade, all round, for four solid years. Trump himself reverses position so often it is almost impossible to keep up. That will be why this guy has flipped - if indeed he has flipped.
Ever been around executive staff long enough?

Its why I'm not surprised personally.

Most strike me as being sociopaths and psychopaths.

If Trump loses and won't leave, the right and left will unite to oust said dictator.

Its just something people entertain each other with prior to an election.
Really? Just entertainment?

In 2016 a "rumor" was spread that Hillary and John Podesta were running a child sex ring out of the basement of a pizza restaurant. Part of the evidence was that people would call in for a Cheese Pizza (CP) when they wanted Child Pornography (CP). Many people believed this. One man went there with an AK47 and shot up the place.

After the election, the rumor slowly died out. Now it is back...

The false theory targeting Democrats, now fueled by QAnon and teenagers on TikTok, is entangling new targets like Justin Bieber.

The sheeples do not consider this stuff to be "just entertainment". They believe it and act on it.

Is Caputo looney? Maybe not.

Michael Caputo - Wikipedia
He worked for the Reagan Administration with Oliver North, and later as director of media services on the campaign for President George H.W. Bush in the 1992 United States presidential election. Caputo moved to Russia in 1994, after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, and was an adviser to Boris Yeltsin. He worked for Gazprom Media in 2000 where he worked on improving the image of Vladimir Putin in the U.S. He moved back to the U.S. and founded a public relations company, and then moved to Ukraine to work on a candidate's campaign for parliament.
Maybe he is just doing his job.

I have, and I think you're using clinical terms too loosely.
Greedy, and motivated by a system which reduces success to share price? Sure.
Psychopaths? Nah. I've come across a few that could fairly and accurately be described as narcissists in a clinical sense though.

I see the guy has in fact apologised and suggested he needs time off - probably to see a doctor.

So even he now realises, on reflection and following the backlash, that what he said is not sane.

What I see you doing here is what far too many Americans are doing: readjusting their scale of normality to accommodate the uniquely outrageous and divisive behaviour of Trump's administration over the last four years.

I thought when I read it that Caputo was having a nervous breakdown of some sort - and he may well be. But there is a worrying trend for Americans to believe (or to affect to believe) the most ridiculous, swivel-eyed conspiracy theories at the moment. I was shocked to see that even @KenS , someone normally pretty rational, endorses a conspiracy theory about Obama colluding with the military to take over the country: Trump is angling for a third term

Obama taught constitutional law, at Chicago Law School, for over a decade!

WTF is going on? Mass hysteria?
I hold to the same standard as when the investigation was on Trump. Let's investigate and see where it falls.

1) They did determine that there was no collusion by Trump
2) They did find that an agent falsified an email to continue the investigation on Trump.
3) They did find that they did not give all pertinent information to the FISA court that should have been presented
4) They knew beforehand that the dossier was not a good source but acted like it was.

So... let's see how it plays out and support the investigation.

I believe you are one of those who place an equal treatment no matter what political position you hold.

What has any of this to do with an alleged military takeover by Obama?

I know answers can get lost in the multitude of posts. I don't subscribe to that conspiracy and mentioned in earlier posts that the "military" addition was embellishing Obama's talk about a third term to equal the embellishing of Trump's third term.

Both are ridiculous.

Obama never suggested he should have a third term. The extract I quoted makes plain.

I quoted where he mentioned it and both are still ridiculous
Really? I don't think I recall you quoting anything that supports the insane notion Obama is planning a military takeover.

What he said was that he believed he would have had the popular support to win a third term if that has been possible. That is all he said.

Perhaps I had better remind you, as it was on another thread several days ago. I am requoting from my post 13 on this thread: Trump is angling for a third term
QUOTE
OK I've found a clean copy. It is from an interview with Obama. Not sure when the interview took place but the report in Bloomberg's magazine, is dated 17th July. Here is the relevant section:
"
Barack Obama has said he believes he would have won a third term in office were he eligible to run in the 2016 presidential election, while also casting a skeptical eye at the UK Labour party under Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership. In a wide-ranging interview with former aide David Axelrod, the outgoing president expressed his belief that he could have won re-election in 2016, based on his view that most Americans still subscribed to his progressive vision and ideals.

“I am confident in this vision because I’m confident that if I had run again and articulated it, I think I could’ve mobilized a majority of the American people to rally behind it,” Obama said on Axelrod’s CNN podcast.

The outgoing president summarized this progressive American spirit as one that “manifests itself in communities all across the country”.“We see it in this younger generation that is smarter, more tolerant, more innovative, more creative, more entrepreneurial, would not even think about, you know, discriminating against somebody for example because of their sexual orientation.”

Ultimately, Obama did not think the election represented a sea change in American politics or a repudiation of his administration, insisting that “the culture actually did shift, that the majority does buy into the notion of one America that is tolerant and diverse and open and full of energy and dynamism”.

To an extent, this was reflected in the final outcome of the election, where Hillary Clinton won the popular vote by nearly 3m votes."

Needless to say, this does NOT say Obama thinks he should have been entitled to a 3rd term, or that he was "upset" not to have got one, at all. Just that, if he had been, he thinks he could have won it.

Perhaps I am not saying it correctly. Sorry for not being clear so let me say it differently.

My statement about a military takeover was fabricated as is Trumps military takeover.
