For Atheists: have you done the Beatitudes?

NIV:

The Beatitudes

He said:

3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Very hard if you think about it, I can't do it.

Serious question, what's your motivation?

Personally, I feel that fear of hell is a poor motivator. I prefer people whose morals come from their own innate sense of the golden rule, not from fear of punishment :)

I always viewed the Beatitudes as being passages of comfort and assurances.

I have to admit whenever I hear peacemakers, this always springs up..

"Done them"?

I see them as an excellent goal, if taken with a grain of salt. There's just too many vague words in there to accept them as a solid moral code.

OK. But you're on this forum and you probably searched for God in the past?

I am on this forum because its a nice place to be, despite the ignorance about atheism shown by many theists.

I left the church age 14 because the congregation were a nasty bunch. In searching for the reason for their sad attitude i did read the bible (kjv, its more complete than the niv), all of it, cover to cover and found the reason in the first 85%. That search also opened my eyes to what christianity and god are.

They are beautiful, but they don't apply to those who don't follow scripture.

What do you mean by "have done"?
Is it your claim that atheists should be out there "blessing" the groups mentioned?
If so, what meaning would said "blessings" from an atheist have?
