How the 1917 (sic) flue put an end to WWII

"The closest thing is in 1917, they say, the great pandemic. It certainly was a terrible thing where they lost anywhere from 50 to 100 million people, probably ended the Second World War," Trump said. "All the soldiers were sick. That was a terrible situation."

This vulgar narcissist is dangerously dumb.

It should be "1917 flue [sic]", with brackets instead of
parentheses, & after the erroneous word instead of before.

I don't disagree that Trump is woefully intellectually challenged.
But let's not dismiss the possibility of a slip of the tongue.
Otherwise we'd have to call Obama "dangerously dumb".

He visited 57 states, but only 1 to go....AK & HI.
Wouldn't that make 57 + 1 = 59 states?

Anyone know the context for the remark?

I can only find clips of Trump's gaffe online, not what was said immediately before.

What he said gives off a whiff of "hey - it's okay to respond ineptly to a pandemic! Pandemics can do good things like stop wars!"

... but I'm not able to confirm that this interpretation makes sense in the larger context of the press conference.

OMG.
How do folks like this get in to power in a democratic country?
History repeats itself.

Will the US voters return him to office?

President Obama really did stick in your gullet, didn't he.

The second vid didn't work, but the first explained itself.

Oh well, I guess that some folks really do still believe in President Trump. Quite wonder-ful.

Obama's never graced me gullet.
I've given him credit for some good done.
This is about applying a single standard to politicians.

It's not about believing in Trump.
Rather, to not allow that Trump could have a slip of the tongue is
to aggressively seek out finding the worst in him. That poses a trap
of bias confirmation. Moreover, it would be hypocritical to apply
that standard to Trump, but exclude one's favored politicians.
Or do you believe in double standards?

Seems a bit like you're conflating trump's pathological lying with Obama's occasional gaffe?

You're wrong.
I'm simply allowing that Trump is also prone to gaffes.
Or do you believe with certainty that Trump never mis-speaks,
& that he believes WW2 (not WW1) ended with the 1917
plague?

I caution against over-eagerness to always see the worst
possible in one's foes, while casting a blind eye towards
one's allies.

Or one can consider the body of comments made by each man and reasonably assume that the Trump comment was characteristic while the Obama comment was entirely out of character.

No, you're wrong. While I'm sure that pathological liars make gaffes like the rest of us, they have set themselves up for harsher scrutiny.

Not only is trump pathological, he's unbelievably ignorant. In this case, I'd bet you dollars to donuts that he really doesn;t know - even roughly - when WWI and WWII occurred.

If one applies the standard that Trump really believes every dumb
thing he says, & that Obama's dumb utterings are always a slip of
the tongue, then no matter what either says, it will always prove
what you already believe.
Does it make sense that Trump, who seems to give little consideration
to what he says, is somehow impervious to slips of the tongue?

It’s more a matter of repitition. You and Obama, and I and everyone here make occasional gaffes. Obama, and I, and most everyone here will admit their mistakes, apologize, and move forward.
But tRump unapologetically makes glaring mistakes and blatant lies again, and again, and again, and again, and again, and again, and again, and again, and again, and again, and again, and again, and again, and again, and again, and again, ......... Till he is a clear and present danger. Period. And eventually a sane person has to say “Enough! Good-bye!”

Stop being his apologist lapdog. Please. We know you voted for him. It’s OK. He deceived lots of people. Mistakes were made. It’s not too late to correct them, and recognize the threat that tRump represents. We won’t harangue you for helping to put him in. We like you here. We understand. Please try.

You're trying to hard to believe the worst in Trump,
& the best in Obama. It's the same behavior I see
in my loopy right wing friends. You & they use the
same methods....just against different enemies.

You greatly misunderstand my post.
I've never claimed that Trump handles his errors & gaffes well.
Indeed, I've criticized him for his thoughtlessness & boorishness.
Stop being his apologist lapdog.
Again you greatly misunderstand.
When I see erroneous reasoning, I'll correct it.
The problem with anti-Trumpers is that you're so furious over
his beating Hillary that you're obsessed with seeing the worst.
You rage at any correction or consideration of alternative views, &
lash out with epithets like "apologist lapdog".

As for my having voted for him, this appears to also really anger you.
But remember.....you guys made Hillary the alternative.
You guys made a corrupt & incompetent war monger your candidate.
Shame on you for presenting me with that choice of 2 evils, & then
whinging about my vote for the lesser evil.

We should always remember that some people will always defend and/or justify Trump's words and actions, including using the use of false equivalencies, no matter what he says or does.
