If god is within me, do I need an outside shepherd? Or should I simply listen for the indwelling Spirit?

should I know thyself?

No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, 'Know the LORD,' because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest," declares the LORD. "For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more."

That actually depends how sinful you are. The spirit is not always with even a Christian especially at the point when he sins.

Basically God is sin-incompatible. God the Father doesn't listen to human prayers directly. We will rely on the Holy Spirit to pray for us. The Holy Spirit is a "whisper", He doesn't work against your will. He's considered a helper or counselor. You will miss out the "whisper" when sinful enough.

Moreover, the HS is poured on believers only basically, He may choose to work beyond that though.

That's something else. We preach the gospel out of love, to cover up that we are the sinners. That's how love can cover up sins. To put it another way, we are murderers by using our money in excess to surf the Internet while with the full consent that children are dying of hunger every single second in Africa. We are however joining God's business of saving souls by preaching the gospel, a job much more important than feeding the children with food, as without food people will die physically but without the gospel humans may wind up in hell spiritually. That's how with love we can be saints, though we are equivalent to murderers in a sense.

so god is a sinner because it won't cure all the ills and sins of the world?

I don't think it's an either/or situation, thus I believe we can use both our "inner light" and also the "light" from other sources.

The answer to me is "it depends".

Some can benefit from having a teacher/guru/spiritual directory and some not. And further some might find one helpful at certain phases of their life and not at other phases.

And of course not everyone who thinks he or she needs such a guide actually does and so forth.

To complete the picture, there are sayings like "when the student is ready, the teacher appears".

IMO, we all need "soul-initiation," that is, that which carries us into some new relationship with life that results in a liberation of our heart and our energy. If we don't "tend" our souls, we begin to wither on the inside. Joseph Campbell said that "what we're really seeking is an experience of being alive, so that our life experiences on the purely physical plane will have resonances within our innermost being and reality, so that we actually feel the rapture of being alive."

Both. Electric current runs through all wires but some are better conductors.

Just preaching love doesn't cover anything.

"... let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth."

If you want to preach to someone who is hungry you have to feed him first (can't remember the exact quote).

"The way your heart beats makes all the difference in learning to live":
