Aside from the "cut costs, harm to service level be damned!" approach of the post office management of late, what can be done about what some (Well, mainly 45 and associated) claim will be an election fiasco with mail-in (as opposed to absentee) ballots, what could possibly be done?

Well, first the Post Office could reauthorize overtime and end the other "cost savings" measures until the election is over.

But is there anything else?

Certainly. There's one option that 45 has turned to for several emergencies in the past: activate the national guard and/or military. It worked for border security (at least so it's claimed), it worked for building the wall (at least so it's claimed), and it worked in setting up COVID emergency hospitals and testing centers. It's even claimed that deploying government agents has been effective in controlling violent protestors...

But, no discussion of how to address the potential problem, just complaints that the Post Office will be snowed under and it'll be weeks before we know the final results...

That's simplistic. Since I am in Florida, are the laws concerning mail in ballots the same throughout all the States?

The post office can easily handle the 'flood'. Anyone who says otherwise is a lying sos.
I get multiple pieces of junkmail a day. Advertisements, etc. Clearly there isn't an issue with volume.
Additionally, less people mail stuff with the advent of the internet. So the USPS had a much tougher job a decade+ ago.

I think it might require strict monitoring and security. It's not just a matter of preventing someone from fixing the election, but there may be those who might simply want to undermine public confidence and mar the process. Even if the election isn't tampered with, it may only be enough to make the public think that it was, and that could possibly lead to unfortunate circumstances.

None of this is possible when the funding is cut. Trump has put his own man in charge and will do whatever he can to screw the election. He is doing the very same thing with the US Census which is mandated by the Constitution that every 10 years every person in the US is counted and this in turn determines not only the amount of federal funding for the states, but even more importantly, the census determines Congressional representation for the states. Much of this census is taken door to door to reach people who do not respond to either the mail in or on line form, the poor, the homeless, undocumented immigrants etc. It goes without saying that covid19 had delayed this door to door phase of the census. Not only did Trump not extend the time, but cut short the time allowed to finish the count, with a December deadline. Which means Trump will still be in office!

All states have and are using mail-in ballots to a greater or lesser extent, and both Pence and Trump used them in 2018. My wife & I have used them for around 20 years now here in Michigan.

What I believe Trump & Co are likely up to is to be able to call the 2020 "fraudulent" if he loses, and this could create an extremely nasty situation nationally.
