Extinction

This is hardly news. We've known of the threat for decades. Why would we expect a reaction now?
I suppose it is the percentage that makes it news. I was being wildly optimistic. Globally I reckon we're already past the tipping point, Holocene extinction and all that.

Doesn't matter how loud anyone shouts, business pulls the strings

Business?
An ever expanding population is the cause.
People use resources & occupy land.
This leaves less for the critters.

Because of the ever expanding population business soaks up the resources and turns land to agriculture and logging to feed/house and profit from the ever expanding population.

But yes, without the population there would be less business

Scientists have known about the sixth mass extinction event for a few decades now. Humans don't care. Well they don't care enough to knock it off... until something directly impacts them like a pandemic (which was very much the product of excessive human population combined with the pressures that exerts on the rest of the people of this world).

" Extinction: Quarter of UK mammals 'under threat' "
I think it will be effective to state "11 out of the 47 native British species are near extinction" or something similar which states the number and includes names of some of the famous species along with it.

You could have a large concert with bands there to talk about saving these animals. You might be able to get a lot of cool bands. Invite a few MP's and make presentations to the MP's.

How about we look for someone to volunteer to burn themselves to death in protest.
Maybe we could bring a big cage filled with a variety of animals and kill a quarter of them as part of the entertainment.

I hear what you're saying. Sadly that is the kind of thing one might do, yes. Its as likely to be effective as the concert idea.

Will this be a wake up call, to Brits at least? The destruction of natural habitat, alien invasive species and historic persecution are the main causes of the declines.

Quarter of UK mammals 'under threat'
Mind you, this is only about « extinction » in the UK, not on the planet. Just about all of these species are present across continental Europe as well.

Brexitty thinking, perhaps?? ;)

Have you seen the documentary film Brexit? It was about how the Brexit campaign was run. Very interesting! Of particular interest was the innovative use of computers and AI to find disaffected voters and convince them to vote. It was very powerful -- and frightening.

Really?
An acquaintance is paid by government to control or protect all of wildlife in a couple of counties in England. He can close any building site down on-the-spot if he can see that any wildlife at all is in danger in any way. He can put industry under intense pressure if he finds any problems for wildlife at at all.
He has held this position for about twenty years to my knowledge.
I know of several operations which he has initiated although not all of these were focused upon mammals.

By the way, we have not had a red squirrel or wildcats in Kent in my lifetime. Our successes over the last thirty years have been very good.

Is this a cry for attention?
