Louie Gohmert, who's refused to wear a mask, tests positive for Covid-19 - CNNPolitics

(CNN)Rep. Louie Gohmert, a Texas Republican who has frequently refused to wear a mask, has tested positive for coronavirus.

Gohmert has spent ample time on the House floor during votes speaking to aides and lawmakers — without a mask or social distancing. His office did not respond to multiple requests for comment.
Gohmert had been scheduled to fly aboard Air Force One on Wednesday with President Donald Trump to Midland, Texas, where the President is fundraising and touring an oil rig. He tested positive for coronavirus on Wednesday morning during a pre-flight screening at the White House,

"I can't help but wonder if by keeping a mask on and keeping it in place, that if I might have put some germs or some of the virus onto the mask and breathed it in," Gohmert said. He added that he has been wearing a mask more during the past two weeks than he has in the past three or four months.
"I can't help but think that if I hadn't been wearing a mask so much in the last 10 days or so, I really wonder if I would have gotten it," Gohmert added. "You know, moving the mask around, getting it just right, we're bound to put some virus on the mask that I sucked in. That's most likely what happened."

That's right, Louie. Wearing a mask is what got you infected. Your fellow Texas Republicans should take heed and stop wearing masks immediately.

Of COURSE! It was the mask that got you sick. Everyone knows that wearing a mask is what causes viruses to spread. Not sure why you didn't follow your Supreme Leaders advice and protect yourself by injecting disinfectants into your blood stream.

Talk about motivated reasoning, Louie. These guys have no shame.

Has anyone tested positive while wearing a mask?

Mask is not to protect you, it is to protect others. You touch infected surface then touch your eyes, mask ain't going to help you.

I'm not "anti-Trump" but I really wished he would have explained all of this. I don't think much of politicians/public leaders but some folks do, so set an example for the pro-Trump crowd.

I think his biggest failure in this.

Instead of swallowing his pride and admitting his mistake, he tries to double down to save face but it only makes him look like even more of an imbecile.

It's totally possible. My wife is a nurse, and whilst supportive of wearing masks it drives her crazy when people wear them improperly, or use their hands to adjust their masks without sanitizing, etc.

Masks don't cover the eyes (for a simple example), so touching the front of a mask (where the virus would have been 'trapped' potentially, and then rubbing eyes is a simple path for transmission.

This should be taken as 'anti-mask', it's absolutely not that. Just that masks are an imperfect protection, particularly if not correctly worn, or disposed of (or cleaned) as and when appropriate.
I would add that having 2 people wearing masks in any given setting mitigates against this to a degree, since there are now 2 layers between the two people's lungs...

Do you think it's possible if masks were work correctly etc? Is there still a risk factor say even with doctors and nurses who wear masks?

It's get much lower (to the point of negligible) if they;
1) wear them properly
2) put them on and remove them properly
3) follow associated guidelines (for example around hand sanitizing)

Here's some depressing news for you:

Further, some recent studies also have sparked questions about coronavirus immunity. For example, results from a study recently released in preprint that hasn't yet been peer reviewed showed that antibodies developed against the coronavirus in people who'd been infected declined significantly within two to three months post infection.

Moreover, Elitza Theel, director of the infectious diseases serology laboratory at the Mayo Clinic who was not involved in the study, said researchers are finding that coronavirus "antibodies will peak at about 20 to 30 days after symptom onset, and then they decline," and "[t]hey seem to decline much more rapidly in individuals that were asymptomatic or had mild forms of the disease."

Given that antibodies help to neutralize the coronavirus and are believed to provide people with immunity against the pathogen, those findings have raised alarms among some observers that people may gain natural immunity to the coronavirus for only a few months.
Can you catch the coronavirus twice? Here's what research says.

I'm sure you can catch it twice. You can get the flu multiple times.

Here is the difference in approach... A Republican catches COVID and people accentuate "no mask - how stupid" when it is stupid to think that the ONLY way to catch it is through the respiratory system and not through touch and, on top of that, it is just the Republicans that do it.

Vs

Someone catches COVID and we say, "that's a shame, let me pray for them" or "I hope the doctors can help him or that his symptoms are minor."

Just a different approach to the same issue. I like the second whether it is a Republican or a Democrat who gets in close proximity in a peaceful demonstration. Who cares? Life matters.
