Why was the Battle of Britain a big deal ?

I know we (Britain) defeated the Luftwaffe but the RAF was being assisted by other countries.

Another thing: Spitfires had radar while Luftwaffe planes didn't. So why is British manufacturing nowadays crap compared to German? Look at cars: we have Aston Martin but sold Jaguar Landrover to India while Germany has Mercedes, BMW, Audi Volkswagen, etc.

I'm dying to know where the parts are manufactured from.

I think most American cars here are made from Japan and Canada than in the US.

If you ask me, there's no such thing as 'purebred' vehicles anymore.

I suspect the same thing is going on with British vehicles.

WHO MAKES JAGUAR / WHERE IS THE JAGUAR FACTORY?

While Jaguar is owned by Tata Motors, Jaguar Land Rover is headquartered in Coventry about two hours north of London, and the main Jaguar assembly plant is in Birmingham, England, which has been a hub of manufacturing innovation since the beginnings of the Industrial Revolution in Britain. You can even take a trip across the pond and take a Jaguar factory tour! Many plants across the world make genuine Jaguar and Land Rover models, but if you buy your Jaguar in the United States, it was probably made in England. Here is where Jaguar factories are located globally:

  • Birmingham, England — Jaguar XE, XF, XJ, and F-TYPE
  • Solihull, England — Jaguar F-PACE
  • Wolverhampton, England — Engine assembly plant
  • Graz, Austria — Facility co-operated by Magna Steyr, manufacturing the Jaguar E-PACE and I-PACE
  • Changshu, China — Jaguar XE, XF, and engine assembly
  • Pune, India — Assembly of complete knock-down kits* for the Jaguar XF and XJ
*A complete knock-down kit is a kit of parts that have been manufactured in one country (England for example). The kit is then sent to another country (India in this case) for final assembly.

Who taught you that?
We didn't defeat the Luftwaffe, we defended ourselves from their attacks and survived. An amazing story.

But our Bomber crews who attacked Berlin probably made the difference, and that is not mentioned. Hitler was so furious that our bombers actually dropped some bombs on Berling that he halted the attacks on our airfields and commenced the London Blitz......... and our fighters survived to defend us.

No thry didn't. Our radar stations got knocked out, mostly, and our intelligence was gathered by the Royal Observer Corps stationed along the coastline, calling in to HQ.

German engineering was brilliant during the war, but they had a disadvantage which lost the war for them. Hitler was a total maniac.
His decisions helped us immensely.
That he wanted his name praised on every communication helped us to break the command secret codes, even !!!

Spitfires didn't have radar. The radar was on the ground. And actually the Battle of Britain was really won by Hurricanes, which comprised (I think) 80% of the fighter force, rather than Spitfires. The Spitfires were faster and were used to deal with the fighter escorts of the bombers, but it was the Hurricanes that took the bombers on.

The battle was a big deal because it removed the threat of invasion, which Hitler had planned (Operation Sealion).

And in fact it was only won by Britain thanks to a mistake by Hitler. A German bomber crew bombed London by mistake, accidentally violating the tacit agreement to leave capital cities out of it. Churchill reacted by commanding a bombing raid on Berlin. This angered Hitler so much that he switched the German attack from the UK airfields, which they had reduced to a very bad state, to London. This saved the airfields, enabling the British fighters to operate more effectively.....and so Germany lost the air battle and Operation Sealion was called off.

Today the UK motor industry is highly successful, but the volume vehicle production consists almost all of non-British-owned marques.

Spitfires, nor any other planes had radar, the equipment was big, bulky and heavy. Far to heavy for lightweight planes

Some of the greatest car manufacturers you never hear of are british. AC of ac cobra fame, Ariel (atom), Noble, Morgan Caterham, McLaren, Radical.

About 80% of all open wheel race cars (F1, Indy etc) are british made by british manufacturers

Exactly!
What saddens me is that no credit, no recognition nor any acclaim has been made to the bomber crews who flew the Berlin mission.

That mission changed Hitler's tactics which helped us so much.

And another stupid decision of Hitler's was that he refused to allow the funding for drop tanks on the Messerschmidt fighters. If they could have extended their time over S.E. England then it would have been much worse for our fighters.

Sites say it was the use of radar that won us the Battle of Britain as it helped us locate and intercept the Luftwaffe

We were not alone though- other countries helped us fend off the Germans

If you want to believe those sites, do that.
If you want to know the truth, investigate the role of the Royal Observer Corps. Radar 'helped' when it was functioning, but we had other long range detection systems which your 'Sites' obviously haven't told you about.

At a village in Kent (most strangely) called Dunkirk there is a hill, and on top of that hill was an ENORMOUS Concrete hemispherical half-dish about thirty meters across that could detect aircraft engines at great distances. These were rather hard to knock over. They were very sensitive and effective.

You see, 'Sites' can just waffle, 80 years after the events, and then folks believe it all because they are 'Sites'..... wow!

:)

Yes radar helped, ground based radar strategically sited along the south coast, not in planes.

Yes,the RAF comprised of pilots of several nationalities.

HI Chris.

For sure, Spitfires and Hurricanes did not carry radar. However, the Bristol Beaufighter and Mosquito did. In 1940, Group Captain John ‘Cat’s Eyes’ Cunningham was the first RAF pilot to shoot down an enemy aircraft with the aid of his on-board Airborne Interception Radar (AI). The success of Cunningham – and fellow night fighters – was attributed to their eating lots of carrots; resulting in a sharpening of their night vision.

According to Air Ministry propaganda it was the humble carrot, rather than – the still secret - AI that gave them the edge!
