White Tomatoes

About two years ago there was a thread on the delicious black tomato. It seems that some people have never seen them and there are a few who think the whole idea is a joke...

They are available here right through the season along with several varieties of red tomato, orange ones, green ones, yellow ones, brown ones, stripy ones, even purple ones. What I have never seen until today is a white one.

A local bio producer delivers a couple of kilos of what is in season every week. On opening the pack tonight there were fresh dug potatoes, an aubergine, a couple of small bell peppers and a selection of different tomatoes. Mostly red, few yellow ones and... two white ones.

I thought there was perhaps something wrong so i Googled "white tomatoes", sure enough there they were...

Only two but nevertheless we will enjoy them with lunch tomorrow

You take PC to far. I am proud to know several black people who don't balk (or bark) at being black
It's so ridiculous here that I've seen news types refer
to blacks in other countries as "African American".
Reminds me of the movie, "Bruno".

The only black tomato I ever ate I disliked.

It was at a farmers market. I just wanted plain red. The dude tried to sell me a basket of assorted tomatoes. He gave me one he called "chocolate tomato" to try. I really didn't like it, it tasted off. Like it was spoiled or something. So I just bought a basket of plain red ones.

The darker ones do have a stronger flavour.

That's too bad, really. The only tomatos anybody gets in North America have been so genetically modified to be perfectly round and perfectly red -- but they don't taste like anything. Yet, there are -- if you go look for them -- heirloom tomatos (retaining the genes that the genetically modified ones no longer have) that are absolutely delicious, and wonderfully varied in their flavour, texture and use.

Come late August and September, give me a big, ugly Ontario field tomato -- bumps and ridges and all -- and I can make myself the best sandwich ever using nothing but thick slices of that tomato, and some good bread and mayo. Yummy.

Not all of us live in New York.

I live in semi rural Indiana. Rich soil, plentiful rainfall, hot sunny weather.....
You can't seriously expect me to believe that you people in the frozen North even know what a good tomato is.

I've grown many varieties. The greenhouses here all have at least a dozen variations. The farmers' markets do as well. I see a comeback in variety of many fruits and veggies. With global warming, it's getting even better, as the climate zones shift to higher numbers. That might be one of the few advantages to global warming.

It might come as something of a surprise to you, but the most southern place in Ontario, my province, is SOUTH of the north end of California. And, in fact, is almost exactly aligned with the northern most part of Indiana.

Now that is crazy,
Do you really think that? That term would seem analogous British Asian et al.

"British Asians (also referred to as South Asians in the United Kingdom, Asian British people or Asian Britons) are persons of predominantly South Asian descent, and sometimes of broader Asian descent, who reside in the United Kingdom.
...
Categories for British Indians, British Pakistanis, British Bangladeshis, British Chinese and Other Asians have existed under an Asian British heading since the 2011 census."

In other words, the frozen North.

I live in southern Indiana, about halfway between Indianapolis and Louisville. In an alluvial river valley.

And most people grow their tomatoes from seeds they collected the year before, the way they have for decades.

Our tomatoes are the best.

British Asians in britain is acceptable for British resident Asians. African Americans is not acceptable for British resident Blacks, or blacks resident in any country except america.

The key was the phrase "other countries"

Get em like that in the local supermarket, common enough to treat them as tomatoes. Don't buy them though, our family is not big enough and a can't abide to waste food

You're, uh, from New York. Aren't you?

Tomatoes like that impress city folks, but they often get a bit woody when they're that big. I'll take two, half the size.
Tom

I ain't from the city....there is a whole heck of a lot more to NYS than NYC....but its a common mistake...besides...you're just jealous that we have bigger tomatoes in NYS

This reminds me of mangoes. I know folks from India, Malaysia, Singapore, Guyana, Trinidad, Mauritius, and more. They all insist their mangoes are the best on the planet. When my daughter and I were in Salem, India (called the mango capital of India) in TN we went to a mango market. About a dozen people came past indicating which mango was the best. (their personal favorite of course) I find it an interesting observation ... that local is best, but the locale varies.
