This questionnaire is important to me: I am gathering member feedback to help me make better policy decisions. Please help out by responding to it.

RF Rule 7 reads in its entirety:

7. Quotations and Citations/References
Plagiarism is illegal. All quotations, whether to posts of other members or to material external to RF, should be properly referenced or cited. When quoting other members, use the forum's quote feature so the person and material you are responding to are easily referenced (see Rules 1 and 3 for additional guidelines regarding quoting other members' posts). When quoting material external to RF, even if it is your own, always provide a citation and limit your quotation to a paragraph or two rather than quoting the entire content (see Rule 4 for additional guidelines).

How strongly do you agree or disagree with this statement: "Overall, RF Rule 7 is reasonable."

Please pick which one of these five options is closest to your views. If you do not see an option that suits you, please accept this poll was not designed for you, and move on.

OPTION ONE: I strongly agree with the statement.

OPTION TWO: I somewhat agree with the statement.

OPTION THREE: I neither agree nor disagree with the statement.

OPTION FOUR: I somewhat disagree with the statement.

OPTION FIVE: I strongly disagree with the statement.

Very reasonable. Limiting an outside quote prevents undue load on the server, although characters probably don't add up to much, but also doesn't take an entire work from another website where one should go if they want to read the entire article. A paragraph or two is fair use when used to reference an explanation or question for something.

I think it's fine. How do you regulate scripture quoting? Outside of DIRs and scripture debates, although cited they do take up a lot of space and usually without comment to clarify what the scripture(s) are referring to.

As a general guideline I have no issue. I agree with the intent. But I've quoted poetry and scripture as well as more extensive quoting of news stories when I felt it was necessary.

What about stuff in the public domain? I never read anything from the last two centuries, am I still supposed to cite things from those works, and how?

I guess it's a judgement call. I'm a little fuzzed on seniority here. Some of the posts we have in RF seniority would get newbies in trouble for evangelizing etc for the same thing. I don't know how it would be implemented but good to keep in mind nonetheless.

Again, I prefer 'mostly'. To be somewhat for X does not preclude being somewhat against X.

A valid point. I went back through previous polls and both variations were used in different questionnaires. I don't want to assume Phil's intent, so I just adjusted the wording for consistency in this thread. I'll leave it to him to decide if he wants to change 'somewhat' to 'mostly.'

I am going to vote that I strongly agree with this rule, but I am going to slightly disagree just because of only one little thing. The part where it says: "When quoting material external to RF, even if it is your own, always provide a citation and limit your quotation to a paragraph or two rather than quoting the entire content (see Rule 4 for additional guidelines)."

I would change it to something like: ...limit your quotation to what is strictly necessary to get your point across...

Sometimes people may find necessary to quote more than one or two paragraphs.

Yes, I know. I can be a huge nitpicker.

When dealing with paywalls, it is indeed impossible to get a point
across with only a 2 paragraphs. This is because many posters
cannot read the linked source. And sometimes, alternative
sources are not to be found.
