S. Dakota - Trump - no distancing - optional masks

Hard to say. There haven't been many cases in western South Dakota yet, so it may be that very few get sick. But I do agree it's a bad idea, though not at all surprising. I've been to South Dakota dozens of times and it is the reddest of red states. The AVERAGE person there is far far right of the most conservative rightwing members of this forum. But for the most part they are very nice, friendly people willing to help just about anyone. It's just a different culture that people on the coasts can't understand.

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
I would say most of these people are going to come out of these events just fine simply because the virus doesn't kill the majority of people it infects.

I would love to live in the Dakotas. Extremely beautiful country out there.

I'm kind of on the fence since I don't like the government telling what to do. I mean I'd wear the mask because I'm being asked to. Just don't like government mandates. Seems to be the republican view.

However, it is a public safety issue. I don't like enforcement but it this case, I'd accept the necessity of it. Not for my safety, but for everyone else's. Shouldn't really be a partisan issue.

Trump ought to come out and say, "This is not a Republican or Democrat issue. It is a public safety issue. We will be requiring masks.
Unfortunately, some right-wing folks might not be voting for Trump if he did that.

Everyone going to the rally sans mask will be responsible for everyone coming from the rally with Covid-19.

But more importantly, anybody who does become very ill or dies won't be able to demonstrate in court that their infection came from this event.
Were it possible to sue for damages, if someone infected you, there'd be a lot more social distancing and mask wearing.

As long as they don't need hospital care and overwhelm the local facilities which is one of the big concerns.

Also some will have long-term difficulties including apparently sudden diabetes for reasons still be explored.

And they might spread the disease to others who don't go to the rally and are seriously at risk.

We actually had a meeting about this at work today. Despite being a hospital on the other side of the state, we are getting prepared for an uptick in infection rates.

Seems like they are leaving it up to the individual to decide if they want to go to this celebration or not. I'm sure they won't tell people to not social distancing because it isn't required. I mean, if we waited for the law to tell us what is right and use it and "roaming scientific facts" to dictate who is right or wrong, then without these two things, would people know what to do when it comes to protecting themselves? Are people dependent on being told numbers, stats, distancing, and masks to make moral personal decisions? That would be interesting if no one showed up to the celebration because people can think for themselves.

A little comment/ramble.

FYI, death and mild to no symptoms are not the only possibilities. There are many who had a bad case, have no traces of the virus, and yet weeks and months later they still have not recovered. They survived, but the fatigue that group reports sounds about as bad as a crash from a speed bender, excepted it hasnt ended for them.

I disavow my Governor.
I posted the following in another thread, but I'm copy/pasting it here, because it fits. This is about what happens when you decide not to manage a pandemic, compared to when you decide to manage it carefully.

Have a little look at some recent stats (June 24) for new COVID-19 cases in 3 Republican states (in a country run by a republican President) compared to your northern neighbour at the same time -- run by a LIberal government:

New COVID-19 cases on June 24

Florida (pop 21.5 million) -- 5508
Texas (pop 29 million) -- 5489
Arizona (pop 7.3 million) -- 3541

Canada (pop 37.5 million) --- 279

No, but it does kill a lot of the people they take it home to -- parents, elderly family members, those with compromised health.

Is that important at all?
Those people are facing the same odds as anybody else. You do have a point however that they should be aware that when they are around people who are considered the most vulnerable, they ought to wear masks. But it's their choice and their body at the end of the day.

If it was really that bad, you would find more people in compliance just by virtue of the experience.

And maybe that's what makes the difference between the US and other nations who are handling this pandemic much, much better -- if all you want to be is the fabled American "rugged individualist," well you'll wind up where you are. If you decide that you can be an individual, but it doesn't detract from your individualism to give a rat's hiney about other people, then you can put on a mask and still not think you're now a certified commie.
