Hello everyone,

I'm not sure how I found this forum. I guess it has to do with my interest in other world views and the google searches I have done in the past. I've been on a spiritual journey for a while and experienced and learned many ideas. I have been from being a Christian to an agnostic to an atheist to back to being an agnostic to back to being a Christian to I don't know what now. I have listened and learned from the atheist and from the spiritual. It's not surprising to find atheists here in a forum that is for the religious. I've learned a lot from both. I think they all have some truth in them, but I found that it seems like there really is no absolute truth. It's like a bunch of scientists trying to solve a mathematical problem where each one doesn't have the full answer but some may be closer to the answer than the others.

I joined this forum because I see there are a lot of people here who are searching like me and others who are very knowledgable. I'm hoping I can learn something here and can contribute.

Welcome and let me state for the record based on your comments there is an absolute truth and your very close to it.

Thanks bobhikes. I know there are absolute truths. To say with certainty that there is no such thing as absolute truth is to make an absolute truth claim, and I would be contradicting myself. I know there are absolute truths in science and mathematics. For example, 1+1 = 2 is an absolute truth. I also believe in absolute right and wrong. It's the belief in certain things that has to be always taken with a grain of salt. A belief now might change into another belief when you learn more about it. There are many claims when it comes to world views. Many religious beliefs, many spiritual beliefs, many types of atheists with different beliefs. Some atheists believe in the possibility of a multiverse. Others believe in the possibility of other worlds or dimensions where 1+1 does not equal 2. So many beliefs. I think they are all relative.

Can you share a little of your 'Christian' background so we know where you came from (spiritually speaking)?

The truth is like beauty in many ways...."in the eye of the beholder". But truth does not have many faces....untruth does.....this means finding the diamond in a pile of broken glass. Sticking closely to the scriptures rather than to church doctrine will help you get there....

I was raised Catholic, but neither my parents nor the church taught us about the bible and God. I learned about the bible and other religious beliefs from friends. I had friends who were Catholic, Pentecostal, Born Again, Jehovah’s Witness, nondenominational, and atheist. Most preached and shared their beliefs which drew me to search for an answer as to why everybody was teaching and learning something different.

When I learned that the bible was not put together until centuries later, I also learned about the different teachings that were taught by the early churches. Since the early church did not have the full bible, each was going by the book or books they had, their traditions, and the understanding of Jesus that their church understood to be true. We can see this from the letters of Paul to the churches.

What made me agnostic was when I found out that the books of the bible during the first century and afterward may have been tampered with to reinforce a doctrine. I believed that the scriptures were the word of God. But if the bible can be tampered with, how reliable can it be? If God allows for millions of people to be slaughtered, would God also allow for a mistake, an addition, or an omission of scripture or two to be made in the bible? If God would allow one, would he allow many? If something in a meal is contaminated, should the whole plate be thrown out?

As I became knowledgeable about evolution, I became an atheist. Some of my friends preached that as science becomes stronger and stronger, the belief in God will become weaker and weaker. My belief in atheism was reinforced as I read, “The God Delusion” by Richard Dawkins and listened to lectures of him and others like Christopher Hitchens, Sam Harris, and Daniel Dennett.

I became agnostic again when seeing fallacious arguments being made by Richard Dawkins and Stephen Hawking. I believe evolution, but just because one does, it does not have to rule out the beliefs in a first cause. Believing in a multiverse, something not proven to exist is just as believing in a first cause or a God. I remember hearing Dawkins says that he believes that it is possible that this earth was seeded by aliens. Really? When Stephen Hawking said that the universe came out of nothing, he did not mean absolute nothingness. He meant that the universe came out of nothing, but something was still the cause of the universe to come into existence. Correct?

Now, I do believe in a God but not the God the atheist understands, or what most religious people understand. I don’t believe in a God who throws bad people in a fiery hell or in one that punishes people. I think we were put here to experience what is right and wrong. We are living to have experience and learn. We can never fully understand God. Our brain is not evolved enough to fully wrap our minds around a concept of the spiritual realm. The closest we can come in understanding God, I think, is in things like science, mathematics, beauty, love, the enjoyment of living and learning, and in the existence of objective morality.

What I learn from my journey is to accept other people’s journeys. I learn to live and let others live. I learned to not judge what others believe because people learn and change and what one knows might be wrong and cause one to evolve mentally and understanding. Learn what others believe and why. Enjoy most of all your life. Don’t dwell on the past, be in the present, and remember the future doesn’t exist yet.
