The Bible says that even the demons believe and shudder.

James says that Faith without works is dead, being alone.

Jesus' Sermon On the Mount is chock full of things we should do as Christians. It's "works under the [Jewish] Law" that are unnecessary, with the exception of those mandated by Jesus and the Apostles.

so why do you suppose some christians practice anthropolatry instead of doing the work of the sermon on the mount? why focus on the negative vs the positive?

might be a little overkill for my small kitchen. i was just trying to prove thief's point

Hmm, we are open plan, over 900 square feet of marble tiles it takes a lot of work and belief to keep it clean.

They tend to reflect Martin Luther's "saved by grace alone" belief. Then their position has it that if one is a "true believer" they will do good works that Jesus taught.

In Catholicism, that's considered heretical in a dangerous way as these "true believers" may feel they are "saved" just on the basis of belief alone, thus turning their approach into what I call "rocking chair religion", namely just sitting back with nice p.c. thoughts, and that's all. Gandhi was very critical of that approach, thus saying that all too many "elevated the man and forgot his message".

What do you mean by "works" here?

If a Christian explains to me that my marriage to another dude makes me a hell bound sinner, and truly believes that he's preaching the Word of God in an attempt to save my soul, does that count as "works"?

Plenty are in churches only as a tradition or social group identity, without belief in Christ risen. They are very ready to put their trust and hope and faith in a mortal man, then. (which is expressly instructed against in scripture)

Yes. For example, if it is said to you “love others” you may believe it has been said, but if you don’t do as said, the belief means nothing and is not meaningful.
