Atheist Myth: “No One Has Ever Killed in the Name of Atheism”

I've heard the argumemt many times that injustices occur often in the name of religion, but I've found it interesting that the same could also be said about Atheism. So what is true about Atheistic ideologies.

What about those who have died in the name of atheistic philosophies such as:

"marxism, socialism, communism, maoism, Nazism, fascism, totalitarianism, libertarianism, monopolistic capitalism, robber barronism, industrialization, secularism, jingoism, anarchism, social darwinism, eugenics, malthusianism, messianic scientism, nihilism, anti-humanist terrorism, individualism, narcissism, physicalism, materialism, consumerism, modernism, postmodernism, nietzscheism, Marquis de Sade's sadism, (i.e., sadistic murders) moral relativism, hedonism, radical feminism, (i.e., abortions, infanticide, suicide, false claims of rape) radical environmentalism, (i.e., ecological terrorism) Anton LaVey's satanism, (i.e., ritual murders) and the "Law of Attraction." (i.e., the deaths, including suicides, caused by Peter Popoff, Sylvia Browne and other gurus") All of these atheistic philosophies have resulted in the deaths of countless hundreds of millions of human beings. In comparison, the deaths caused by religion seem almost quaint and insignificant."

...What do you say about the hundreds of millions of deaths from the above? Which come from the source below..?

Marquis de Sade's sadism, (i.e., sadistic murders)
No-one chooses to be a sadist; many are born with this inclination as it's a sexual inclination.

The opposite is masochism and I can tell you without a doubt I was born this way.

You can't choose what will and won't give you sexual satisfaction; either something works or it doesn't.

You've answered your own question.

The murders were carried out in the name of (say) Nazism, not atheism.

Anyway, why do you associate that list of 'isms' with atheism?

Another atheist bashing thread based on ignorance and bigotry.

You deliberately conflate nationalism with atheism, god bless America.

Most of those "atheistic" philosophies are not atheistic, in fact some are decidedly christian, and at least one had the backing of the pope.

What do you say about the 800+ million deaths brought about in the name of religion where either one side or both were killing in the name of their god... You want a list of conflicts?

It's always dangerous to say things like "no so-&-so ever".

But you included some questionable "atheist" groups.
Addressing just some....
1) Nazis.
I recall their slogan...."Gott Mit Uns".
2) Libertarianism.
I've known many Christian libertarians.
3) Robber baron capitalism.
You really think they're all atheists?

I think you are committing a category error. These are crimes of atheists not crimes in the name of atheism. Most of the philosophies mentionned above aren't atheist. In fact, many of them are explicitly religious. Popoff was a Christian minister. The "Law of Attraction" is inspired by karmic beliefs. Others are compatible and even encouraged by religious beliefs. Nothing prevents you from being a social darwinist religious person for example, Hitler was one of them afterall. Other persons like the Marquis de Sade never killed anyone neither did Anton LaVey nor was there any wave satanic ritual murders. This seems to be a gish gallop more than anything else.

Gotta love this bit from your link:

" I simply couldn't take it anymore. I left atheism behind because it was snarky, sniping and moribund reveling in its bitterness and denial."
After reading the article it describes the author to a tee...

Which is sad though, because even though the article is really nothing more than an emotional rant, the author does bring up some valid points.
Unfortunately, the points are lost in all the snarky, sniping and moribund reveling....

The belief that there is no god was certainly a key point in Marxist ideology, and one which was explicitly utilised to justify the disregard for human life in pursuit of the 'greater good'.

None of what you mention is in any way shape or form 'atheist philosophies'. NONE of them are based on a lack of belief in any gods.

Care to try again?

No it wasn't. Communists simply didn't want any competition. They wanted people to worship the state and people worshiping a god interfered with that.

More than that the Christian Orthodox Church in the Tsarist Russia was politically immensly powerful and dictatorial. You couldn't ovethrow the Tsar without overthrowing the Church at the same time. Religion was a tool of the Tsar to crush impovrished people under his boot and stamp out rebellions in their ambers.

Might have a better case if you didn't keep repeating the same completely fictitious and ludicrously exaggerated number to bash something you don't like in return ;)
