Curious: Why limit the genres to Classical? Would a poll listing several with classical as one option generate more participation?

My current favorite genre is ambient, and the artist of that genre I like best is Steve Roach.

I listen to Metal which is one of the closest genres to Classical music. I like its intensity as opposed to classical. I am very specific to the bands i listen to though. Mainly I listen to Metallica, Tool, Opeth, Judas Priest, Megadeth, Alice in Chains (Grunge with metal influence), Rage Against the Machine, Lacuna Coil and Symphony X.

What might interest you is that there is a Mongolian Metal band called the HU who use Mongolian Throat singing and traditional Mongolian instruments in their music:

Depends on what i fancy. I voted same of each, i guess over a year thats about right. At the moment its classical with a leaning to the cello of Yoyo Ma

Yes, I have heard The HU! Sorry, that eg was meant as a joke because sometimes threads like this end up being discussions about genre definitions and who is and who isn't in what sub genre.

These days I mainly listen to classical but for many years it was mostly rock - and mostly metal and prog. On the metal front, AiC remain a real favourite of mine.

I just wanted classical and non-classical to see how much interest there is in classical on the forum.

I'm partial to a bit of ambient myself. Dare I say it I use GarageBand on my iPad to create ambient music. Regarding Steve Roach, I've got Dynamic Stillness, Immersion: Three and The Magnificant Void. I've also got his app, Immersion.

Care to share on the classical front? I particularly enjoy solo piano music and seemingly have developed a particular liking for early 20th century Russian composers such as Scriabin.

I don't listen to a lot of music. I prefer silence when I work.

When I do listen, it is usually classical or classical rock. I prefer Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky for classical and Stones, Hendrix, Eagles, Doors for classical rock.

Well, every band in the metal pretty much invents their own subgenre so discussing the is pointless. I dont even like genres because I will like a Thrash metal band like Megadeth but not like the rest in the genre.

It is cool that your music taste is evolving over time. I used to be into house music, and Acid Jazz at one point. Now they dont really do anything for me because they arent as complex as metal.

BTW, about 15 or so years ago my wife and I went to a concert by Kodo, though not flutes of course-- drums.

In this order, the last several nights have been The Jerry Garcia Band, The Grateful Dead, Eric Clapton, The Allman Brothers, Led Zeppelin, Janis Joplin, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, and Joe Cocker. We like classic rock.

Agreed. Kashmir, In My Time of Dying, and Ten Years Gone are all tours de force from that album.

You probably know that Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton all came out of the Yardbirds, and each were critically acclaimed by Rolling Stone and others, but didn't have the same level of fame or financial success, Clapton being best known, followed by Page, then Beck.

I think I know why. Beck can only play guitar (he writes, but nothing memorable). Page can play and write great songs. Clapton can play, write great sons, and sing well.

My classical listening was a lot more several decades ago when my vinyl HiFi was still functioning, but not so much now, since now the music available to me is CDs of some of the vinyl albums plus new stuff, and mostly ripped to mp3s for playing via the computer or a Denon CD/Radio unit with USB input. I also have many cassettes - compilations and some recorded by a friend, who introduced me to Electronic music (Kistenmacher, Schultz, etc) and to Blowzabella and Dead Can Dance - my two favourites.

Most of the music I listen to is a variety from the late 60s/ early 70s plus some later stuff, and being - Prog Rock (King Crimson, Nice, Van de Graaf Generator, etc.), Folk (Steeleye Span, Fairport), Blues (Some American, some British), Modern Jazz (Some of the classic players), Chinese/Japanese/Javanese (instrumental), Irish (Planxty, Chieftains, etc.), some comic stuff (Bonzo Dog, etc.), and anything I fancy - all randomised into a list of my favourite tracks. Apart from a few Lily Allen tracks, a few Punk tracks (Stranglers, Clash, Damned, etc.) and some classic songs from any era, I don't think I have that much that might be considered Popular, and I rarely listen to modern stuff - I quite like some Billy Eilish. I used to listen a lot to classical on the radio but even that I don't tend to do much now.
