Today is May the first. In the U.S. as of this day there have been 64 742 deaths from Covid 19. There are thousands dying from this every day, and tens of thousands of new infections every day.

And these numbers are expected to increase as businesses open and social distancing eases off.

I am just putting this here as a marker, a signpost in time.

I think we need to zero in to more volatile killers:

Realizing this is just 2016, yet the rate of these top three are much more deadly than Covid-19

A few weeks ago, modeling touted by the White House and reported widely in the media put the death toll at 60,000 or maybe 70,000 by early August. We passed 50,000 on April 23; 60,000 on April 29; and are on pace to hit 70,000 within the next three to four days, with little sign of slowing...

We could easily hit 100,000 before the end of May, unless the pace slows dramatically.

And it apparently doesn't include many thousands who have died at home, rather than in hospitals and other medical facilities.

There are 1,082,411 people in the US who on this date are confirmed to be infected, or were recently infected. (John Hopkins)

Of course, the real number is anywhere from 2 to several times higher.

The true death rate from this virus will not be known until the pandemic is past us.

What? Me worry?

You do realize that the original estimate was north of 2 million (with an m) deaths. It was then reduced to over 250,000 deaths. Now the death toll is in line with normal flu season totals. We're being hosed...

those are not 'confirmed' #'s
True. These only count those who died from Covid in a hospital or a nursing home or similar institution.

The actual deaths are likely to be much higher when they figure out how many people died from Covid in their own homes.

At least on the CDC website, they said it can take a couple of years to filter out the true numbers. Also had a couple of doctors in the news from Bakersfield saying that some hospitals are forcing doctors to report death due to other causes as being Covid-19 related. I suppose that might aid the hospital administration in asking for federal dollars.

Well, when you hear folks claiming to be making decisions based on the science, best to assume they are lying. There is no real science at this point.

Six months into the Spanish Flu in 1918, it hadn't yet killed 50 million people, either...

The causes in the graphic are not infectious diseases, and do not vary greatly from year to year...a result of effective global public health policies that have greatly reduced infectious diseases as causes of death...now, many people die from systemic illnesses related to getting old...

Sure we should target these other illnesses as well, but to me, you seem to be implying that Covid-19 or other pandemics should be ignored, or something...Will you still think we should be more concerned from these 'normal' causes of death and not worry about covid when it has killed 50 million over a couple of years (if it behaves as the Spanish Flu did in 1918-20)?

And remember, we don't have 500,000 or 5 million or more dead right now because the world has been largely shut down to stop the pandemic's spread...

We need viruses for genetic engineering & therapy.
And I'm sure that some are useful to our microbiome,
which is an emerging science.
Of course, I know you're joking....but I'm a triggered pedant!

No, we took action and interrupted the spread of the disease...flattening the curve (as they frequently say) and reducing the immediate death toll. I hope that will buy the time to come up with a cure or at least an effective treatment.

I wonder if we can use viruses in genetic engineering for rejuvenating cells, to extend life.

This is right up there with the dumbest thing I've ever read anywhere. NO ONE, not Trump, not Pelosi, no one is saying there's no real science. You are totally ignoring all the science from the DNA analysis, drug trials, vaccine efforts everything.

I mean, what are you trying to do with posting something that ignorant?

In the end, if it turns out to be a bunch of baloney... Then probably global warmimg is a bunch of baloney too.

...We'll see.

Not that it should be ignored (like these three that I mentioned that you seem to want to ignore)

But when did it become necessary that the whole world should increased abuse, depression, increase suicides, lack and distress for a disease?

When did freedom mean "sequester like under tyranny?"

Why didn't they do that with the other viruses?

If you want to protect those who are vulnerable, protect those without causing everyone else to get into problems too.
