Is this the end of the World Economy as we know it?

Hi everyone!

From everything that’s going on it seems that apart from the sad human toll and suffering as a result of the Corona Virus, the effect on the world economy is even more devastating.

I have a positive view of all this. One that says that the present day system is being ‘rolled up” to be replaced by a new one that hopefully is better and far more just.

What could replace it or what should replace it in your view? Will it be a more ‘spiritual ‘ or same greed based system?

According to the scriptures, God will bring in the rulership of his Kingdom and crush all corrupt human rulerships (under the influence of the devil, 1 John 5:19) out of existence and replace them. (Daniel 2:44) Daniel's prophesies were about "the time of the end" and we are seeing all the signs that Jesus gave to indicate its nearness (Matthew 24:3-14).....that time is approaching very rapidly IMV.

When Jesus taught us to pray for God's Kingdom to "come" and for his will to be "done on earth as it is in heaven"....that is what were have been praying for. We are not asking to go to the Kingdom, as if all Christians are somehow promised heaven....only the 'chosen ones' will have that privilege. (Revelation 20:6) We are asking for the Kingdom to come to us. Its rule will mean an end to all pain and suffering...and even death. (Revelation 21:2-5)

Don't most people want to live in a secure and peaceful world? Have humans ever been able to deliver that?
War is all they know.....fighting for what?....land?....resources?....national pride?....patriotism?...ideals?

If man is left to rule the planet...there will not be a planet left to live on. This is why Jesus will hold all humankind to an accounting (Matthew 7:21-23).....no matter what label you wear or how much you want your own ideals to play out...this is not our planet. We don't get to dictate to God how it should be ruled. He has allowed us to try every form of human government we can think of....all have been complete failures......its time for God to return the planet to his rulership.....and he will do so, ready or not.

That is how I see it...

Hi Deeje. Just wondering if what you wrote wasn’t already said during the Great Depression or/and the two world wars? Or maybe after the tsunami and the attack on the world trade centre.

It seems that whenever these kinds of events occur they are interpreted as the end’ .

Anything different to you about now and those times? I have my own thoughts but I’m interested to know how you view past calamities compared to now? Thanks and I hope you’re safe and well. God Bless.

Jesus gave us a 'fingerprint' in a series of global (not local) events that was begin with unprecedented warfare. The Great War of 1914 (later called the First World War for obvious reasons) was the first war in history to involve every nation on earth....it was followed by the pandemic of the Spanish Flu, which took more lives than the war did. Food shortages followed as the war effort exhausted food supplies and drastically cut any nation's ability to produce it. Earthquakes would also increase, causing much damage and loss of life.

Betrayal would be the order of the day as people selfishly looked after themselves. False prophets and false Christs would come on the scene and fool a lot of people, leading them off in different directions.

Love would disappear from the world as a "me first" mentality took hold crushing the neighborly spirit that once was common, but is not so common now. Neighborhoods are becoming places where people remain anonymous. Even before lockdown, many didn't venture out because they entertained themselves at home via the internet....some of the entertainment was not of the sort that promotes good morals.

An increase of lawlessness would also mark this period....causing a lot of mistrust. Endurance would be required if one was to maintain their faith. (Matthew 24:13) So for us, 1914 was the beginning of this time period and none of the events that have happened since are a surprise. They are part of the 'fingerprint'. It is pointless speculating about exactly when the "end" will come because Jesus already said that 'no one knew the day or the hour but the Father'.....but having said that, he also told us to "keep on the watch" because the end would take many by surprise. (Matthew 24:42-44)

We are expecting a "great tribulation" to break out (Matthew 24:21) but the Bible does not say exactly what triggers it.....perhaps it is the world economy crashing to levels never before seen. Or perhaps it is the collapse of religion which the Bible predicts as well.

We have to understand that all the world's economies are tied in together and the nations of the world right now are broke. Where is the money coming from to pay for all these workers who are now out of a job? These nations were facing hard economic times even before this pandemic hit....

Perhaps they will be looking at who has the wealth.....so that they can sustain life at some level. Religions have the money and are falling out of popularity as the world becomes more secular.....its a wait and see for us....

What interested me the most about the Great Depression was it led to the establishment of social welfare or security systems for the many people who found themselves out of work. Over the last 40 years with the resurgence of neo- liberalism the disparity between the wealthy and poor have grown. I think the current crisis presents an opportunity for reform. It will certainly necessitate us supporting a huge number of people who are unable to work or earn a sufficient livelihood for the basics.

Personally I think we are going to end up with something like the Venus project proposes, but it will not be yet.

In fact I don't expect to see any changes at all. I think the system will simply work even harder at maintaining things as they are.
In Denmark we are already seeing stories that the economy is bad, because the danes are simply not spending/wasting enough money. So I wouldn't be surprised, if our government (Like last time during the economic crisis) uses a similar tactic, which means encourage people to spend money, might even release some to the public to get things going. There is no intelligent solutions behind the current system, its all driven by greed which is required for it to work. If people don't spend money constantly it just doesn't work. Which is why eventually it will collapse, when robotics and automations really take hold and the purchasing power collapses, if not the environment does first.

So my prediction is that there will be no visible changes..AT ALL!!, but rather we will see government encourage people to spend money like maniacs in an attempt to kickstart things.

It veers a little towards populist history, but Tom Holland's book 'Millenium' is pretty interesting on this topic.

A "spiritual" economy?
Yeah...that'll happen.

No, the economy will eventually look much as it does today.
But I hope that some lessons will be learned about the strategic
advantage of keeping critical industries within our borders....or
at least having excess capacity with close allies.

Sometimes I think it would be nice to have a international credit system in place. No dollars, no various denominations. Just universal credits.

Something like a Star trek economy.

It's just the top of my thoughts without figuring the ramifications of having something like that.

I do not know. Is US China battle for supremacy coming to a head?
No, because China made a terrible mistake when it ignored its own constituents. It opted for an authoritarian political situation. That's going to bite it in the butt. Look what happened in Hong Kong. No, its got no elasticity. Its outlaws puns! Can you even imagine living in a country where you're in trouble with the state for making a pun? Its doomed. I'm sorry, but there is just no competition.

What about an economy where our basic necessities are guaranteed? I know we should work for a living but many are exploited and driven to slave labor just to be able to provide for basic necessities. If that exploitation was taken away by having everyone’s basic needs met then employers couldn’t exploit workers as they simply could refuse to work if they believed there was unfairness or exploitation involved.

The other system im thinking of is profit sharing where the workers have a basic guaranteed wage to meet their basic needs but also have a share in profits. So if they work harder or better and the company does well then they get a share in the success rather than it all going to one person.

Hi Adrian. I really hope so. I don’t think we in the west are fully aware of what many people in third world countries have to go through daily just to survive not live decent lives, just survive.

Imagine you earn $2 a day to cover food for a family of 7 with no Medicare system, no pensions and no unemployment so when someone gets ill it becomes a choice of go sell something or stay sick. You pay the doctor upfront or he won’t see you.

Our family in Burma are confronted with that reality daily and no matter how we help them it’s the system that oppresses their lives and they just can’t rise above the struggle.

There is no Medicare, unemployment benefits or pensions in Burma so one is at the mercy of circumstances and the goodwill of family and friends if things go bad you often won’t get help. It’s broken systems like this where the people need some support. I really hope their circumstances change as so many around the world suffer silently but nobody sees what they go through. Out of sight, out of mind as the saying goes.

A profit sharing system where workers shared in the success of a company?

Isn’t that limited liability company that can also be owned by its workers?

I think workers share their success in normal (non-communistic) companies. If they do well, the company gets orders and workers get their wages.

I've been an advocate of that for I don't know how long. I just don't understand why businesses don't adopt something like that?

Workers are motivated to produce and share in the rewards when it succeeds. It's a win-win situation.

I tend to think that the economy revolves around something else , where the success and failure of any company is not the objective or goal here. Something a lot darker and more shady lay within the corporate elite mindset that's largely self-serving in nature which corporations don't need to be the engine used to fuel succes. It seems more relegated to being just a tool that can be used until it's worn out and subsequently discarded.

Things can't keep going in the direction they've been going. But, I doubt if people will be able to go back to living simply and without the things we have today... unless forced. Disease and climate change could be the things that cause the change to happen. I never would have thought a virus could stop the whole world. Then add more tornadoes, hurricanes, forest fires, rising sea levels? It seems unlikely that enough people are going to want to change until the whole thing collapses. Then, when everyone asks, will the Baha'is be ready will a working plan?

Replace 'economic growth' with 'economic stability' as the main goal. Reduce inequality.
