3.3 million jobs lost

3.3 million jobs have been lost due to coronavirus. The last time we had it this bad was in 1982 recession.
Source U.S. Jobless Claims Skyrocket to Unprecedented 3.3 Million

Fortunately, the jobs of both my wife and myself are considered essential, at least for the moment.
I told my wife last night, "As long as neither of us get the Coronavirus we're likely to do OK".

So no faith in any God but random luck keeps me off the streets.

There was a time we were being kick out of the place we were renting and no place available to move too. I was pretty much a mental mess. I know there is no certainty in life but it brings a lot of comfort to assume some stability in your future.

A job at least allows an assumption of stability.

Yeah you're one of the lucky ones too. My wife works from the computer at home through her employer who provided her with a laptop and I work for a transportation company contracted for food store distribution.

I do find myself being a bit more charitable than I normally am because I know people are out there who really are in a hard spot yet remain cognizant that there are a ton of scammers out there now and unscrupulous charity rackets.

Try making any social programs now.
The bill reads a lot like the Democratic wishlist as it turned out. Most of the money goes to small business, extended unemployment, cash to everyone outside of the rich, help for struggling hospitals. To me it reads like 4 social programs in one.

The jobs aren’t “lost”. The jobs are on hiatus. They will return after the anti-virus restrictions are lifted.

Although the numbers are misleading. Many illegal aliens also became unemployed but can not apply for unemployment insurance. So the total number is higher. Plus some of those that became unemployed will simply leave the jobs force through retirement or choice.

Whereas the right would sacrifice any number of people for jobs for the survivors.
That can still happen after all this is over and the impact is tallied up. I foresee massive layoffs post-crisis although I hope I'm wrong.

Personally I think the right is more involved with keeping those who are willing to take the risk to keep the country's economic engine running. You can thank the cowboys and rednecks later......;0)

The right are primarily a group of risk-takers and the self-sufficient who are not afraid of this stuff to the point of paranoia and panic iconic of the onset of the human insanity that we are starting to see.

I'm not saying it's totally limited to the right but I would say for the most part it is.

All we can hope for is that it does not go past a shot in the arm during a hard time.

Beware
Wife got furloughed this morning. Thankfully between my job and the money we get from rent, we'll be able to survive this.

Remember what people been saying on this forum.

Lives more important than money and making a living.

I agree with that sentiment (emboldening mine), but it's rarely so black and white. Many people have the same dilemma in my country, where they have to choose between staying home for safety and going out to feed themselves and their families. And in a third-world country, most don't have the luxury of social security. You either work or have no money.

I don't know what the best solution is, but I would hope nobody ultimately had to choose between sacrificing any lives for money. It even seems self-defeating; what's the point of a robust economy meant to ensure people's welfare if said people die or suffer because of contracting a pandemic while going out to work?

It seems to me that both the right and the left need to work together on this one. Butting heads can only get them so far when nature is ideologically blind and won't care who believes what once it hits with something like a virus.

Stay safe out there. I hope you and your family don't have to choose between income and health and that this trying time passes soon enough.

To me, relying on the government to get me through this is the greater risk. Even with the best intentions, the choices the government make could be the wrong ones.

Government enforcement has got me concerned a bit, but so far they seem to be responsible and controlled within reasonable parameters.

The thing that's got me about the whole thing is why all this worldwide hoopla over a virus that still has considerably low death and survivability parameters.

I might be missing something here but I just don't understand the extreme measures that have been employed to the levels that they are now.

Statistically the numbers are still very well in terms of casualty rates and we've made a lot of progress so far in combating it.

I really wonder if it's some kind of social experiment being conducted now. Of course the latter is just me and my love of conspiracy theory.

On the bright side though, spending $2T on assisting
people is much better than spending even more on
the once-seemed-possible war with Iran.

Yes, but at some point the two crossover.
Crime rates in Australia are rising as unemployment spikes and (I'm guessing) people take short term actions whilst under stress including drug, alcohol and domestic violence.

Severe economic hardships cost lives too.

I just looked up Italy for comparison.
Italy Coronavirus: 80,589 Cases and 8,215 Deaths - Worldometer

Over 8000 dead,. And it is still not over. Thousands more could die.

And it could be much much worse in the United States.

It's still somewhat low* although the percentage is higher. What does that put us at?

A 9.8 percentage rate?

60.48 million is the overall population of Italy.

If the applied percentage rate doesn't change, that will put it at a potential maximum of 604,800 est for the worst case scenario with the rest of the population being able to handle it afterwards, givin the immune system would have been exposed and antibodies created within the body for which I'm sure the figures would be a lot lower as the years continue with this particular virus.

It's also noteworthy for taking into account the higher demographic of elderly in Italy as compared to other countries, which could explain the notably higher figures for which the percentage would be adjusted because obviously not everybody will be as old. While it's definitely terrible and very tragic in Italy, I don't think it should be used as a template although it would definitely apply to countries with a high population of elderly and those with weaker biology to be more cautious.

*I know that could be arguable for some people.
