I have noticed and the question repeats as time goes by

WHY?.....are C cell batteries NOT rechargeable

am I looking in the wrong direction?
don't seem to recall ever seeing that size battery AS a rechargeable

I recall about 20 years ago having rechargeable sizes off all batteries. You could find them at Radio Shack. Remember that name? Maybe that's why you can't find them now. ;)

yep.....and the store went bye-bye
and the batteries went with them?

I'm wondering if there is some patent in the way?
or some behind the scene double dealing

I think it is mostly a matter of market. Most devices today us AA or AAA. Very few use C or D any more. So, the rechargeable ones are made for sizes that are used: AA and AAA.

I have seen C and even D as rechargeable batteries, but it was a fairly long time ago.

I think they were specialists in dying tech. I recall other manufacturers had them, but Radio Shack was the place you'd find all kinds of stuff that no one else was carrying anymore. I guess the demise of 5 1/4 inch floppy disks may have led to their final collapse.

People these days use LED flashlights and CD players are at least 20 years out of date: most modern computers simply don't have them any longer.
