Does fasting boost your immune system?

It's really not as difficult as most people think. And hey, in the long run it'll save you a couple of trips to the store.

I'd be careful about spreading potentially false information from a pop science "study". From my understanding, fasting increases cortisol, a stress hormone, which weakens the immune system, at least in people who are not already used to fasting.
Its a well documented study by researchers at USC. Read the ****ing link before you start vomiting un-informed guesses

Well, I was just going to delete my post.
But I see someone already has.

I don't bother reporting things. I do think it's dangerously false, but whatever. I'm not in charge.
Tom
I deleted it by accident, meant to report it.

I find it amazing that you would put "I think" ahead of what a renowned university research team found after an intensive study.

one must starve their beast if they wish to find the star in the east ...so I heard and it has been good advice from my perspective...but each to their own (edited for typo)

I did. Then I went to the link to the original story which had voices of skepticism. Then I went to the internet and did a search on fasting. Then I found a serious highly technical research paper that might or might not apply to humans with COVID-19.

The results is that a claim that "intermittent fasting is always good" is full of horse pucky. There's evidence it helps with some conditions. But it's snake oil to claim it's a universal elixer.

Therefore I find the OP to be inappropriate given the serious of the pandemic.

Intermittent Fasting: 4 Different Types Explained – Health Essentials from Cleveland Clinic

I was told awhile ago from a doc that fasting or not eating regularly keeps the body from monitoring metabolism correctly. So, our weight shifts since after awhile it feels its starving. Worse case scenario, the body "eats on itself."

I've been fasting periodically for most of my life, and I'm a firm believer in its health benefits.

Today, I found this:

Fasting for three days can regenerate entire immune system, study finds - Flowin

Legally, I would put "this isn't medical advice" or something similar. More of thinking of other people rather than having your sources critiqued for accuracy. That in and of itself may confuse people who "may" feel the need to fast because of what they read on RF.

Especially since it's under health and healing. It's not meant to be personal just a friendly reminder of posting information online: legal, medical, and the like.

Since this isn't a debate thread I'll just shut up and you can do anything you want.
Tom
It's on a debate forum now. I'll restore your post as soon as I can figure out how to do that on a phone.

I can't load the telegraph link. Any if these voices qualified to say?

Can you show me where this claim was made?

Did anyone actually say it was? Or did you just throw that in there for dramatic effect?

Noted.

My Master advises one day a week fasting. I think that's quite safe (for most people). When you have health issues, fasting can kill you.

My health is too bad for fasting (10 kg underweight). I tried it once, and within 20 hours I went into coma. Was an interesting experience though. I never experienced that before. Luckily my Master helped me to get out of my coma, otherwise I would not be typing now (I was alone in my house).

So, maybe if you are not underweight, and having a good health (not too bad), it will work (without killing you).

I remember reading years ago (ca. 1990), that, when your immune system is not good, and you continue fasting till you almost die, then just before you die, your immune system will kick in. Makes sense to me. So, the fat and relatively healthy, maybe have to fast for weeks, to get to that point;)

If fasting boosts your immune system, then why do so many starving people succumb to infectious illnesses that are easily shaken off by the people with a healthy diet?
Tom
That is a simple question. Those die because of underweight or malnutrition.
