Why do so-called smart homes become so popular?

I read in a newspaper today about smart homes, and I was thinking, why do we always want to make things easier? do we really want to become people of laziness? do we really need all this technology?
Personally I would say no, we do not need it, but the business who make it, know how to fool people to think they need it.

What are your thoughts?

What I find interesting is that if you read or even watch the old sci fi stories, they predicted a lot of our tech. We’ve been dreaming of robots catering to our whims for decades. Look at the Jetsons or even AI. Like computer nerds are just seeing what they can do. Is that making people lazier? Maybe. But people have been chomping at the bit for this to happen seemingly for generations now.

But people have been chomping at the bit for this to happen seemingly for generations now.

Yes. People want the fantasy movies to become reality. But they forget how to think for them selfs when computers do everything. We become dumber in daily tasks. How many people can light a fire without lighter or matches today?

I agree ... the tech is possibly unsafe and they can track people, spy on them in their own house.

I will be interested when I can send a robot of myself to work and I stay home and collect the check.
Smart homes to me just means more things to go wrong or break and expensive technicians to fix or replace the problems.

I like the modern technology of high insulation because this keeps us both warmer and saves us money.

But clever tech gismo stuff? ........No!
My next door neighbour has a new car and it is completely filled with micro-processed stuff. Trouble is, when the systems go wonky she doesn't have a clue how to sort them out, and her garage charges her a fortune to solve such problems. Also, if vehicle management warning lights are activated and lit up, our cars will not pass the annual Ministry of Transport tests for road-worthiness any more.

I think high tec gizmo stuff is a total nightmare. I'll stick with old technology.

Most of those are just expensive toys. They will never break even in utility, even if you really work as much longer as you have saved time (and you won't).
But these toys have an economic value. With the money the companies get from selling the toys to "early adopters", they likely will develop real applications that have real value.

I think there are many who don't or can't see the value in work, whether it is of the mind or the body, and often they have not done either. Anyone who has, usually will appreciate such and hence place things that replace work into a proper perspective - since they often come with costs too.

It is driven by the military.
They want radar, we get TV.
They want a computing device powerful enough to simulate cloud behaviour, and we get personal computers.
They want microwave communications, we get cell phones.
They want global surveillance, we get smart phones.

Why ? Because the development costs need to be amortised. And consumerism keeps everyone controlled by operant conditioning. Win win.

"Smart homes" also offer better energy efficiency. Thermostats
can minimize fuel used to achieve a given comfort level.
I use programmable thermostats, but nothing blue tooth enabled.

Btw, I'm not a fan of too much automation. I don't want my car's
lights or wipers to come on automatically. I know when I want'm.
But I also see the safety of automatic braking if the car detects
imminent collision. And airbags....great invention.

Television pre-dated radar.
Research to develop electronic TV (as opposed to mechanical attempts)
goes back to the late 1800s. Radar development waited til the 1930s.

You should give some background for those claimed connections.
If real, they'd be interesting.
