‘Hanau, Germany - On a nondescript street corner in the centre of Hanau, locals arrived on Thursday afternoon with flowers to pay their respects, placing bouquets on the pavement just under the red and white tape that marked off the scene of the previous night's killings.

Behind the police cordon were the blacked-out windows of the Midnight shisha bar, a popular all-night hang-out that became the unlikely scene of a far-right attack that has shaken Germany, and led many to question whether the state was failing to address the threat of far-right violence in the country.

More:
It was here at about 10pm (21:00 GMT) on Thursday that a gunman entered, firing a barrage of shots at customers and a waiter, killing at least three people.

The killer, 43-year-old Hanau resident Tobias Rathjen, quickly left the bar and returned to his black BMW, in which he sped two kilometres (1.2 miles) west through the night to another shisha bar, Arena, in a residential neighbourhood in the west of the city, opening fire again and leaving a further five people dead.’

WIth a resume like that I can understand the involuntary celibacy part, the whole "I am completely insane" vibe would probably be a deal breaker for most women.

I'm not sure what "far-right" includes for Germans. Anyone know the motive..?

I found it interesting that some of the blame is being placed on the German government and media, as it indicated in the article:

On Thursday afternoon, German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer paid a visit, tightly flanked by press as he laid a wreath for the victims. He reiterated Chancellor Angela Merkel's words that "racism is a poison", and said he would do everything to clarify the background of the murders, but did not describe it as a "terror attack".

Lookng on, unimpressed, was Akif, who has spent all 48 years of his life in Hanau. He expressed little patience for the conservative politcian's brief appearance at the scene.

"The problem is exactly this guy Seehofer, these cowards or other politicians have to answer for it because they don't do their politics properly ... the AfD is growing day by day," he told Al Jazeera, referring to the Alternative for Germany, a far-right party.

He also laid blame at the feet of German media, which he says are complicit in stoking violence against Muslims in the country by painting them as so-called "extremists".

"They always say Islam is equal to terrorism - and we have so many ignorant people, sick people out there and they believe in bloodshed," said Akif.

"Attacking Muslims; whether an Afghan, Turk or a Kurd, it doesn't matter at all. It was a planned attack by people who are sick and who have been blinded by the media."

I'm not sure what he means when he says "they don't do their politics properly." That may very well be true, but it just sounds like an odd thing to say. Maybe it loses something in translation.

As for the German media, if it's like the US media, then perhaps there might be some truth to that. The media like to stir up drama and gain ratings.

The complaint against the media seems to be based on the lack of politically correct language being used by the media. For example the use of the term "Islamic terrorism".

...Posters here might not be familiar with what goes on in other forums or media outlets, and how radically apologetic some people can be for Muslims. But I've witnessed it first hand.

I think that more responsibility is laid at the feet of the media than at the feet of the terrorists, for as long as there are Muslims killing non-Muslims or even fellow Muslims due to unjust causes the media have a duty to report on that.

And as for his statement, “they always say Islam is equal to terrorism” I personally think that is him slurring the media, which is ironic considering this is what he is accusing the media of doing to Islam.

With all due respect, I don't understand why this kind of attacks which are really isolated cases are considered more important and than the countless stabbing attacks of Islamic origin in the United Kingdom of the last 2 years.
Non to mention Germany itself, Lübeck stabbing attack, Chemnitz.

It is a form of 'whataboutism' for Islamist apologists.

What I meant to say is that Germany has been doing literally the impossible to fight any form of xenophobia throughout the last 5 decades...
I know it because I read German newspapers.
If after all this struggle, incidents like this still happen, the German Nation is guiltless.

The most defining characteristic of "the right" in Germany is nationalism. Stating to be "proud to be a German" puts you on the far right. Demanding "Germans first" puts you on the crazy right.

According to German news, the guy was a mentally ill individual who used to write crazy letters to various authorities, including the Federal Prosecutor General, but the authorities saw no necessity to react "because he had never expressed to be racist" before. He also had guns and ammo at home, which is very unusual in Germany. He was in a shooters' association which is one of the rare possibilities to have a gun at all. In fact, he had guns and was mentally unstable and wrote crazy letters to authorities, and the passivity of the authorities is heavily criticized now.

They want to further tighten the guns and weapons law now, but the problem is the authorities who apply the laws. They do not like to communicate and cooperate with each other. I can't explain why, it's just a very characteristic trait of Germany.

It's not that they don't want to, they are not allowed. Privacy laws prohibit agencies from transferring data. Occasionally they do so illegally and there are exceptions and ironically you can be forced to waiver your right to privacy but implementing exceptions by law always meets opposition.
