Christian Group Blames “Atheists and Satanists” for Tilting Disingenuous Survey

"Over the weekend, the National Association of Christian Lawmakers, the creation of Arkansas’ Christian Nationalist State Sen. Jason Rapert, did something idiotic on the internet.

They put up a poll on Twitter asking people if they believed “America would be better off if more Christians served in elected office.”

There were only two things that could happen. The first was what they wanted: They were hoping their followers — presumably Christians — would respond in the affirmative, creating the false notion that lots of people want more Christians in office.

Instead, the second thing happened: Plenty of other people saw the poll and skewed it in the other direction almost immediately.

Well, that backfired.

And entirely predictable if you know anything about the internet.
Also predictable is how the Christian group is now blaming everyone but themselves for what happened:

We are aware the Satanists and Atheists have decided to pile on this poll. While you are here know this - God loves everyone and forgives all who ask Him. Salvation is available only through His Son Jesus Christ. John 3:16

Right. Satanists and atheists. As if no one else could possibly be against Christians who use the government to advance their right-wing religious agenda.

Another tweet referred to the comments mocking the poll as examples of “religious persecution and anti-Christian bigotry.”

Interesting how that turned out.
Makes me think of how I thought I would have liked to see Trump impeached, until I thought it out, and realized we would most likely be worse off as a result.
Frying pan/fire concept. Sad.

It's hard for some and impossible for others to admit that they did something dumb. This is one example that makes the psychological point very strongly.

No...it is just that in the Bible Belt they have a form of pure, untouched Christianity.
We have become a Pagan country after Enlightenment....

If you brought back a Christian from the first century, they would not recognize any of the thousands of forms of Christianity today. Including those in the bible belt.

Could there be many more Christians in elected office in the US? The vast majority are (or at least claim to be) Christian already.

I guess we need more atheists and Satanists in office then. If 95.6% of the votes represent the atheist and Satanist communities (and I see no reason not to believe NACL on that) then it's pretty clear they're badly underrepresented in politics.

I didn't think America had so many Satanists to be honest but who am I to argue with a twitter poll?

Are they though?

One of the things that I gather from my limited knowledge of Christ is that he really, really disliked hypocrites. And I'm afraid that I see a lot of those in elected office these days. (Of course it's possible that they don't realize they're being hypocritical, but when someone like Mitch McConnell has it thoroughly and exhaustively explained to him, he can't make that claim -- he just has to not care.)

It seems that (veiled) antisemitism isn't very popular among twitter users.

As a Christian, I would have voted no on that poll as well. Just because a politician is Christian does not mean I agree with his or her particular interpretation of doctrine. Or that they would be protected from flawed thinking, bias or temptation by some magical default.

Yeah, obviously the poll was put up to show, with results pretty much reversed, that there's something about being a Christian that makes for better elected officials, and conversely that non-Christians make for worse elected officials.

I did offer "claim to be" condition but I'm not sure it's your or my place to say.

There's a risk of a "no true Scotsman" issue here too. A hypocritical Christian is still a Christian, which could help explain the results of the poll. I suspect that the people asking were thinking of something quite different to many of the people who answered and so they probably need to be clearer with exactly what characteristics they're looking for in an elected official rather than just a generic label.
