The church of Jesus

NOTE: This thread is in a non debate forum.

In the gospel story where Peter recognizes Jesus as the one that God said would be His son, Jesus says that He will build His church on that rock. I’m thinking now that His church might be the fellowship and collaboration of people when they are learning together to follow Him, encouraging and supporting each other in doing that. Not any single denomination of Christianity. Not only people who call themselves Christians. Anyone, anywhere, regardless of beliefs or affiliation, any time that they are learning together to follow Him, even if they don’t call Him Jesus, or think of Him as the Jesus in the gospel stories.

That makes a lot of sense to me

As a Christian:

I don't like the word "Christianity" - I believe the term limits the universal ministry of Christ

I prefer the term "The Jesus Movement" - this makes things more about Christ and the fellowship of believers than about "the church"

"I’m thinking now that His church might be the fellowship and collaboration of people when they are learning together to follow Him"

Yes, that is one of the definitions of 'Church':

3) often capitalized : a body or organization of religious believers: such as

a: the whole body of Christians ["the one church is the whole body gathered together from all ages"— J. H. Newman]

Definition of CHURCH

I do agree that His church should "fellowship, collaborate and should learn together to follow him..." but I think that the statement of "on that rock" refers to the statement of Him being "The Christ, (the Messiah)".

I don't really know if people who do not call themselves Christians make any effort to learn how to follow Him.

And I'm thinking that's probably why there isn't more fellowship, collaboration, mutual encouragement, and mutual support among humans in this world when they are learning to follow Him: They don't agree on who they're following, much less what "following" means, or why they should be following anybody to begin with.

Peter knew who Jesus was, and Jesus knew who Peter was, and upon that rock (each other knowing who the other was) the church is built.

The only problem I see with this is that before these words were written there was already Jesus' church.

Do you have any thoughts about what I said in the OP?

I would understand the Jesus movement as one of renewal, not with the intent of a replacement religion. People may think of Jesus as a great moral teacher, nothing more, as did Thomas Jefferson when he wrote his bible. The Jesus 'movement' was dead along with Him.

Wow. You got it Jim.
And he tells us what the rock truly is in Matthew 7:24-27.
And there he says “everyone”, or “whosoever” in the KJV.

In the Book of Daniel, where the statue of different metals represents the controlling governments to come to our day, the whole thing is destroyed by a rock, from God, Christ.

Except that the Apostolic Church had a hierarchy with a head, thus not a loosey-goosey just-do-your-own-thing approach.

Daniel is not considered a prophet. He's writing about the persecutions under the reign of Antiochus IV.. Hannukah commemorates the rededication of the Temple after Antiochus defiled it with the Abomination of Desolation.

Not considered a prophet by whom?

I suggest you read the particular prophecy, in context, then compare to the historical events that have occurred.

The kingdoms or empires to come in the Middle East and Europe has nothing to do with the Temple.
