MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WIAT) — A proposed bill in the Alabama Legislature would require all men in the state to get a vasectomy within one month of their 50th birthday or the birth of their third biological child, whichever comes first.

HB-238 was proposed by Rep. Rolanda Hollis Thursday.

...Can someone please explain what the meaning of this is?

Do any Democrats here support this kind of government intrusion of personal rights?

Political grandstanding of some sort.

It's probably got something to do with abortion rights, but I don't know why a politician would present such a ridiculous bill.

I'm not saying I disagree with it, exactly. I'm good with the concept.
It's the gigantic government over-reach that I'm objecting to. Perhaps Mississippi is more inclined towards big intrusive government than I thought. Apparently someone thinks so.

I don't think it's a serious bill that they actually don't expect nor want to pass. I suspect they're trying to make a point about reproductive rights and bodily autonomy.
You are correct. The bill was in response to an Alabama law - now in limbo - that would ban all abortions in Alabama except if a mother’s life was at jeopardy.

It would seem so:

Rep. Hollis gave the following statement about the bill's meaning:

Many have seen HB-238 as an outrageous overstep; yet, year after year the majority party continues to introduce new legislation that tries to dictate a woman’s body and her reproductive rights. We should view this as the same outrageous overstep in authority.

The Vasectomy bill is meant to to neutralize last year’s abortion ban bill, and sends the message that men should not be legislating what women do with their bodies.

Just as I would turn to my doctor over my state legislator to make recommendations when deciding whether or not to have a surgery, or whether or not to take a certain type of medicine – it is my doctor with whom I – or any of my loved ones – should consult when it comes to making the incredibly difficult decisions related to my personal reproductive rights.

Alabama taxpayers have been forced to hand over more than $2.5 million in legal fees to the ACLU to fight unconstitutional attempts to restrict women’s access to reproductive healthcare, and the Majority party’s continued attempts to restrict women’s reproductive rights could cost Alabamians even more.

Carefully raises hand...
A) I'm not a Democrat. It's just what I'm stuck with after the demise of the Republicans.
B) I'm very uninclined to support the bill as written(what was posted).
But a guy with three kids he doesn't support, leaving the responsibility to the rest of us, yeah I'd consider it. Very definitely.
Procreation is not a right, it's a responsibility.

Not by the hair of my chin-chinny-chin. But I am in favor of background checks, ... oh wait! that's for would-be gun buyers.

How about this?
Conceive another child while you're depending on means tested government aid to support the children you already conceived and you're given a choice.
A)Take responsibility and get off the aid.
B) Accept sterilization as a consequence of choices you've made.

It's no more intrusive than abortion banning legislation.

On a related note, I think that if a woman reaches menopause and has had zero kids, she should get a HUGE retirement grant. If she's had one kid, she should get a decent sized grant.

Well, you do have men trying to pass intrusive laws on women's bodies.

Is this part of a womans body?
