How Does One Go About Detecting the "Light of Christ"?

Something I read today on another website:

"We are also born with the light of Christ. It is up to each of us to embrace Him who is the Father of lights. The more we embrace, learn of, follow and obey the teachings of Jesus Christ, the brighter that light will shine in us."

QUESTION: How is this "light of Christ" detected? Is it detectable at all? And if it can be detected, how is it known to be from or of Christ?

I know that when I sin, I usually feel a sense of despair, which I could perceive as being translated as the color gray... perhaps the light of Christ is like that happy feeling you get on the first day of summer, when you see and feel the morning sun, and get that sense that everything is going to be fun and good for many months to come.

...I always liked the smell of fresh cut grass too, when the smog begins to cook in the early AM.

Nothing my eye, Something for sure
I be think maybe that people said all this slaughter isn't probably the best religion to follow, try compassion, long-suffering, and loving your enemies instead. People might take to that instead.

Of course there wasn't a smooth transition to that form of worship. But historically where, and when did you hear about loving your enemies and neighbors. The Christ may be a sacrificial plea to stop violence, and instead forgive people.

Historically that is the first time I believe those ideas were espoused, and gained traction for many people.

Not actually. Zoroastrianism began perhaps 4000 years ago, and their motto was: Good thoughts, Good words, Good deeds.

On the serious side, this is just another meaningless catch phrase.

Did the Zoroaster's talk of loving your enemies though, and praying for those who persecute you?

Their 6 Holy Immortals (Amesha Spentas) were illuminated beings from heaven, espousing the following ideals:

  • Vohu Manah - Good mind and good purpose.
  • Asha Vahishta - Truth and righteousness.
  • Spenta Ameraiti - Holy devotion, serenity and loving kindness.
  • Khashathra Vairya - Power and just rule.
  • Hauravatat - Wholeness and health.
  • Ameretat - Long life and immortality

Buddha did 500-600 years before Jesus, and acknowledged it as being an old rule.

From a Buddhist perspective: a lack of greed, hatred, and delusion within ones mind allows the four immeasurable states of metta, karuna, mudita, and equanimity shine through.

He's talking about what I call a lucid imagination. It occurs when you omni love with compassion, or pacifism with equanimity.

That's pretty cool. Non hatred appeases hatred.

I actually would love to know how old it is.
I don't know how old it is, but it is pretty straightforward: quit hating and don't brood on past actions that cause you to hate. (Forgive your enemies.) Whomever first put it into words was quite insightful.

QUESTION: How is this "light of Christ" detected? Is it detectable at all? And if it can be detected, how is it known to be from or of Christ?

It is detected through conscious or "inner eye". Something ("still small voice" or Self) that flows inside and moves to greater love and wisdom...

Jesus set an example and taught others to follow him. At that time his local people where expecting a Christ (a Greek word for the promised Messiah). Followers of Jesus saw him as Christ. That's why light "of Christ".

...

Well, I am religious, but not a Christian, so here is my answer.
The Light of a carpenter, which was executed for speaking against power, is "love thy enemies". That in practice can only be attained through contentious work with yourself as to accept and respect all humans as being scared and with dignity and worth.
In practice I doubt that any human can do it all the time, but some can do it for short period of time. In a sense it is an unachievable ideal, but all the other options are worse.
So you can know it in glimpses. As from or of Christ, to me it doesn't matter as from Christ or a carpenter, which was executed for speaking against power.
I am a deist, who fall outside the usual natural versus supernatural categories .

When Jesus appeared, life was very difficult for humans. Rome controlled the western world and they had a slave and servant culture that was perverse snd brutal. Therefore, instead of light, the majority of slaves only saw darkness. Suffering and fear created the color of darkness. The light that appeared to the masses; Jesus, did not have to be very bright; on an absolute scale, to appear as light. A tiny match in the darkness of night is very bright. The life and death of Jesus was not ideal in terms of hero worship. The son of God was exploited by man. Jesus was more of a match in the darkness, instead of spot light on stage.

As culture advanced, slavery was abolished, we now have the luxury of spare time and contemplation. The ambient reality is no longer as dark and the subtle light of the match, is often not strong enough to be seen. Many stop looking. However, some look for even a brighter light, to set a contrast to their ambient reality.

Matthew 5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Should be easy to detect.
