Why can't God tell lies?

Jesus said , "ask anything of the father in my name and it will be done for you". What does that mean? He also said some people would not taste death until he returns and if you have faith of a mustard seed you can ask a mountain to be planted into the sea and it will be done for you. Why not interpret it as lying?

God can do whatever he wants, including lie. Why not? I mean, he said "thou shall not kill" then killed the first born of Egypt and floods the world killing women, children, and babies and destroys cities with fire and brimstone and orders genocide. God doesn't follow the ten commandments. Why can't he lie then?

He might find it fun. The book of Revelation strikes me as a lie. How on Earth are we going to have a world full of people with the mark of the beast on their foreheads or hands worshipping an image in order to buy or sell and those who don't get killed. The world has 2 billion Christians and a billion Muslims who would never go along with that. I don't think Jews, Buddhists, or atheists would go a long with it.

It sounds like something few Pagans would go a long with and Hindus would object from what I know of Hinduism and their celebration of the triumph of good over evil and condemnation of such sinister behavior.

It sounds like it is a lie but perhaps it was hyperbole and symbolism to convey a point not to be taken literally. End time prophesies are depressing and scary. Perhaps we should be more open to the possibility that they will never come true and they are simply lies.

God breaks his rules in scripture. He can do whatever he wants to and what are we gonna do about it? Are we going to tell him he can't do that?

Guess a lot depends upon what we mean by a lie - as distinguished from a fictional story or joke, for example.

I don't know.

I think you just stumble over one of the many contradictions in the bible. Which to me seems to have caused Christians and probably Muslims a lot of issues through the ages.

God can't lie, because the bible/God say that it is bad to do so, at the same time God is claimed to be all good, because that is also what the bible tell us.

Depending on how one view Jesus, meaning do one believe in the holy trinity or not. If one believe in it, then Jesus/God were at least wrong when he told them that they would experience the end before their death. Which caused a whole lot of issues on it own, if God can be wrong or lie.

If one does not believe in the trinity, God did not lie, but it was simply Jesus that got it wrong. Which then caused a lot of issues for a lot of the religions that believe in the holy trinity, as they obviously must have been wrong the whole time.

In regards to "thou shall not kill", I think this is somewhat misunderstood (My own view). The reason for me thinking that, is because of the way one read the bible (OT especially). If one read it as if God talk to all people in the world, then it causes a lot of issues as you also point out. But if one read it through the eyes of the ancient Jews, that this was their God, then I think it make a lot more sense.

Because "thou shall not kill" refer to how Jews ought to behave towards each other and those that are considered friendly towards the Jews. You can find lots of examples of this in the bible, different rules for how Jews ought to behave towards each other and also that God in many cases encourage or command the Jews to kill someone that they don't like. So God is not really lying, when he kills the Egyptians.
God does kill a lot of Jews as well, which does seem to conflict with the rules, he want the Jews to follow. But then again he is God and he gave the commandments to the Jews for them to follow.

So in the end, I think you hit the nail on one of the many explanatory issues found in religions, how does one maintain all the claims of God being this and that, while you are constantly bombarded with examples that seems to conflict with them.

Maybe another way of viewing it would be to ask not whether God can lie or not, simply why would He ever need to?

I'm reminded of the phrase:

I imagine after 430 years living in Egypt (sin) the Jewish people would have been somewhat comfortable even though they were slaves(to sin).

God wanted to bring them out. And after He did, they started grumbling because they saw their new condition as being worse than it was in Egypt and they wanted to go back.

"When an unclean spirit comes out of a man, it passes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ On its return, it finds the house vacant, swept clean and put in order. Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and dwell there; and the final plight of that man is worse than the first. So will it be with this wicked generation.”

73 Bible verses about Punishment, By God

If you ask God, who tells lies, the answer would be the man of God tells lies.

And everyone knows that a human being male is that man for he lied about changing God, and claimed that God would not harm you.

God proved him wrong.

Now if you ask that male, how do you know that you are wrong.....he would claim God told him that he was wrong. Which would also make God wrong.

For if God is right, then man would be right also.

If man is wrong, would be when man decided to alter God, so then God was wrong if you cared to use human common sense and reason logic.

He might lie and claim people burn in hell forever to scare people into good behavior
I don't think it's to scare people. I think it's to say that if you think it's going to be easy, you're mistaken.
But God does not allow disobedience to go unpunished.

Sin can be punished but that doesn't mean Gandhi and Buddha are wailing in agony and excruciating pain tossed about in flames forever and ever and ever because they didn't believe the correct Dogma

Which is why it's stupid BS that people are teaching that everyone who doesn't accept Jesus as Lord and savior goes to hell. why can't a person who didn't know any better in this life convert after their death?

Many people believe that if a person does not believe in God than that person is going to suffer in torment for all eternity. I don't believe that!
If a person chooses to not believe in God, than that person will not inherit the kingdom of God and eternal life. He will simply die and never be heard from again.
On the other hand, if a person accepts the salvation God offers and then chooses to return to his old ways, then he will not go unpunished, but suffer a second death. And his final condition will be worse than the first because he will have seen what he missed.

I need to ask myself, "Do I want to neglect such a great salvation that God has to offer?"

If I do, it's because i choose to serve the flesh rather than God. It's because I find the temporary pleasure of this world more valuable than the pleasures of the world to come.

OMG, you’re on a roll today.

You have concluded that God lies, because you do not understand what is written in the Bible.

That’s equivalent to me saying all the people who write elaborate scientific papers must be lying because I don’t understand what they’re saying.

You are semi correct.
It is semi stupid BS. Depending on how it’s pushed by the specific church building and how it’s understood.
Your question though, is odd. What is the imaginary person converting to after death?

Why can't God tell lies?
Who is God?
Who says God can't lie?
Have you ever really met God?
Have you ever met someone who really met God?
Has anyone ever told you "God told me, that He can't lie"?
Has God ever told you "I can't lie"?

Who saw God's mouth move and words came out?
Maybe God can't even Speak, maybe God is not like human
Maybe in the realm of God, there is pure silence, or just mental communication

But to answer your question "Yes, God can lie". I can easily prove this. Just needs a bit of creativity.
You can also prove it easily IMO, as you are one of the most creative posters on RF, I have noticed.
You just need to think outside the box. Most stay inside the box; some even with Tarantulas in it:)

Love, Peace and Blessings to you, my brother
