"Utah Finally Bans “Conversion Therapy” for LGBTQ Children

At long last, Utah has banned the use of bigoted and discredited “conversion therapy” on LGBTQ children, making it the 19th state to do so.

State lawmakers and activists went back and forth for months as they fought to create a law that satisfied the largest constituencies, including the Mormon Church, which initially opposed the ban before supporting it. That change only came after the bill was amended to include exceptions for clergy members.

Still, it’s a victory for decency in a conservative state where that’s not always found.

Supporters navigated a winding path to passage and some dissent remains, but barring it in Utah could give a boost to similar efforts in other right-leaning states, said Shannon Minter, legal director for the National Center for Lesbian Rights.

“It’s really given people a lot of hope,” said Minter, whose group has pushed for bans around the U.S. Virginia is considering a ban, and the issue could also come up in this year in Texas and Kentucky, he said.

Given how conversion “therapy” has led to depression and suicide in some patients, this practice should have been abolished a long time ago. But the bill will now prohibit licensed therapists across the state from torturing their patients."

Allllright.

However, it's Interesting that,

"The rules. . . don’t apply to religious leaders who claim to provide “spiritual counseling” to people “struggling” with homosexuality. They had no license to begin with, so there’s no license to take away." No matter how much the LDS Church urges members to be “kind and compassionate to LGBTQ people,” the fact that this practice will still be permitted in their buildings shows how little they care about or understand LGBTQ people."

That is good news. It is hard to name a state where this ban was more needed. The current state of affairs:

Wow nothing in Alaska? My sister lives there. I suppose they are too busy running away from the grizzlies and black bears all the time.
It is still legal there. The gray areas are where one can go to if one wishes to be "cured" of their homosexual tendencies. Of course that does not mean that one will find such a clinic in those areas. They are just not banned yet.

What they should do is arrest those who are practicing without a licence, acting as if they're health professionals prescribing treatments for patients. Plus, if you administering an illegal procedure on a patient, you could be arrested for a crime. I'm pretty sure, if someone thought forcing a patient to swallow live leaches, while stamping on their bare toes with work boots, would heal them of their gayness, and were caught doing it, they would be arrested and charged with a crime. So, believe whatever they want to believe, so long as they never administer the "cure" to any human alive. Otherwise, it's the leaches for them.

I never wanted to be "cured." I liked myself just fine from the beginning, and what other people thought of me was not among the things that drove me.

The one thing I think I can say, however, is that it must be true that those who believe conversion therapy could be effective must also believe that they, too, are therefore susceptible to conversion -- the other way. That must be a scary thing to admit to oneself.

Wait . . . you are saying that does not work? Excuse, need to make a call and shut down a couple of Alabama businesses of mine.

Could you then supposedly take a straight person through the therapy and make him gay? Just asking.

Hang in there Howard.
I think after Elon Musk lands people on Mars, that's his next project.

Yeah, Mars is a staging post for mining the asteroid belt, so there will eventually be a large workforce there. Mars needs women. Elon can power them.

Isn’t progress amazing ? My grandmother ran on coiled springs.
