Calling All Internet Forum Addicts

I started out on usenet, mostly the German part. But there were some English groups I posted in. That's where I learned English. I had "D"s at school and I was studying CS in a time when German literature was scarce.
And I'm not addicted. I stopped when free access usenet servers weren't available anymore and I took some time before I discovered forums. And I don't take a smart phone with me to living history events to check on forums. I could stop any time. Really.

I'm new to forums. A little over a year ago I joined a self-help forum I prefer not to name. Through there I discovered a few months ago the CARM forums of all things, saw they also had some Jewish members and joined. After a couple of months I had the bright idea to see if there were any other religious forums out there (I was mainly looking for more foruming Jews) and discovered this place, right around the time that the CARM server collapsed. It's back now, but I like this place more.

I did Usenet back in the day. Mostly sci.math and talk.origins. After that, I spent time on topix.com and then moved here.

Where did the bug first bite you? What was your first internet forum (no links please, just the name)? Is it still active or did it die a slow an painful death? Are you active on other forums or do you post here exclusively?
IIDB (Internet Infidels Discussion Board). Survives with another name and ownership (Talk Freethought), but forum format does not hold my interest.

What? Me worry?
Okay, I admit it.... Now what? o_O Is there a treatment program?

The first forum I ever posted on was Planet Baha'i and I came there on January 13, 2013. After that I posted on The Forum for Progressive Christianity, the Adult Christian Forum, The Holy Trinity, the Opinion Forum, Skeptics & Heretics, and Believer, Unbeliever, Ex-believer forum.
During that time I started my own forum called The Spiritual Horizon.

Of all those forums, the only one that is still very active is Believer, Unbeliever, Ex-believer forum (BUE), but it is not as active as it used to be. All those other forums are dead or very inactive. My forum was very active before I ran off to the BUE forum, where I spent most of my time before I came here. My forum has not been very active for years, but I keep my forum going because there are some regular posters who have been there for a long time. We are all friends, and they like the small group and my liberal policies. :D

I joined The History Channel discussion forums back in 2007.
I was inspired by their show about the medieval ages, wherein
they blamed societies downfall on lack of religious faith. I was
skeptical of the claim.
Then it began.....the downfall of modern society.
How, you ask?
@Wirey & I began an exchange of torrid love poems
(disguised, of course, as a couple of other well known
posters...who were chagrined).

My first internet forum was probably Runner's World in 1996. I had a Notebook from my job, and connected to the internet via their IBM 9370 VM system. It was strictly text, no graphics. As time went on I found more and more forums, mostly having to do with running, biking and weightlifting, and guitar. I drifted away from RW, I don't even know if they have a forum anymore. I actually met others from the forum and ran races with them, but lost contact over time. After that I probably spent most of my time, and I do mean most  at Bodybuilding dot Com. I joined there in 2002, and am actually still a member. I haven't posted in a few years. So now here and a few other places are where I hang out, mostly here. Back in the day I was definitely an addict.

What about the smart phone.... How long can you go without it?
I think that smart phones are more addictive than forums and it seems like everyone is addicted to them and they cause car a lot of accidents.

I do not have a smart phone, I just have a regular cell phone, and I hardly ever use it,only to make personal calls when I am at work,or to call my husband if I get stranded on my bike riding to or from work.

Sort of did CGTalk, zbrushcental and deviant art, not much involvement but checked them out most days for ideas or to offer advice where i could.

In, i think, 2009 i stumbled on topix, that got me hooked. They did the dirty by shadow banning on all non north American/Canadian members reducing their user base by around 70%. Advertising revenue fell, advertisers pulled out. They closed their forum doors within 2 years.

Found RF by accident after the topix ban. Needed somewhere to feed the craving ;-). Gave it a try, loved it, sort of like walking into civilisation after a life in the wild.

I didnt have a mobile phone (wont call them smart phones because they aren't) for years. People thought i was odd using a landline to make phone calls, a camera to take pictures, a radio to listen to the radio and s computer for computery things..

Work necessity forced me to eventually get one. Now it sits on the shelf and is only carried when i take a car out. It can get quite remote here and in case of breakdown or accident then its a essential tool (assuming there is a signal)

Geocities chat rooms.

Sudden death, painful to some of us, with a valuable legacy that was saved by some quick action by some people.
Are you active on other forums or do you post here exclusively?
During the last two years it has been almost exclusively here, against my better judgment.

This thread reminded me of the old DDWFTTW debates. Thousands of pages of forums on a rather arcane topic. It is very counterintuitive concept that has very limited applications. Anyone willing to go down the rabbit hole?

Sheesh.... I thought I was the only one. ;)

We still have two landlines with cords,:D and a third one that is cordless, but it is downstairs and we never go down there anymore. My husband and I each have a cell phone, but only for emergencies or in case I have to make calls from work.

Our landline is VOIP now, with 5 cordless handsets and a main base station connected to the router , the handset on that is cordless. The technology works, the kids can chat to their old friends in the UK with no charge.

I seldom use my smart phone. I don't even know if it still has a valid SIM card. My old Samsung has a battery life of about 10 days. It functions as an alarm clock and I can make and take calls. All I need, especially when far away from electricity.
