Can You Locate Iran on a Map?

This is a fake map though. There are certainly no US bases in Pakistan for a start.

Would have to assume those are not the only ones that have been invented out of thin air.

After the September 9/11 attacks, Pakistan-US signed an agreement to enable logistical support for the U.S. troops fighting in Afghanistan.

Feb 17, 2012 · It displays the names and locations of airfields/bases inside of Pakistan that have been or are currently being used by U.S. forces. Some of the bases are used for logistical support, while others such as Shamsi airfield, were previously used by the CIA to launch drone operations.

General geographic knowledge is bad but this looks very much like something deliberately designed to generate the pre-determined headline.

The results are presented on a map with national borders marked on it but the random scattering of the points strongly suggests the map the respondents had didn’t have those borders. I’d also suggest a significant number of people trolling or not understanding the question given the number of answers in the ocean, USA or Australia. Some people are that ignorant but not that many.

I’m personally not convinced knowing the exact physical location of the country is the key knowledge anyway. I’d much rather people knew about the people, politics and culture of the country than just where it is in the world.

I wondered about people trolling, some locations seem completely random. I think the idea is that if you don't even know where a place is (basic knowledge), how likely are you to know about its people, politics, and culture (much more complex knowledge)?

I don't doubt the general geographical ignorance of a lot of people but I still don't trust the methodology of this test. I think they were more interested in spinning up an eye-catching headline by making sure the result was as low as possible than they were about making any serious commentary.

I'm also not sure failing to locate a country on an entirely blank map of the world doesn't mean you couldn't know some things about that country, especially one that is in the news a lot. Someone could be good friends with an Iranian immigrant but fail to get the map question right.

That's true. I don't know if the map was blank, but I see your point. I think ignorance of one is likely correlated with ignorance of the other, but there could be exceptions.

Out of date.

They were asked to leave almost a decade ago after killing some Pakistani soldiers.

Um...
Perhaps because you are STILL avoiding it.

No, I'm really not.

Here, let me give you the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps I've misunderstood your point and it's incredibly insightful and relevant and important.

Clearly state your point for me. Then I'll directly respond to it. Fair?
