Can You Locate Iran on a Map?

exchemist

Veteran Member
A recent Morning Consult/Politico poll of American registered voters found that only 23% of respondents could locate Iran on a map.

Can You Locate Iran? Few Voters Can.

If the map was zoomed in to the Middle East region, scores improved...to 28%.

It's a little amazing to me that people can have such strong opinions of what our military strategy should be in regard to a country when they don't even know where it is. (Notably, political ideology was not a decisive factor in who got the question right; we all did about as terribly).

How about you? Could you locate Iran on a map?
Yes, but then I'm British. :p

What is your opinion about Atlantis?
But wait, can you locate Atlantis on a map?
Cause it seems if you cannot, you should not have an opinion about Atlantis.

.

This is a fake map though. There are certainly no US bases in Pakistan for a start.

Would have to assume those are not the only ones that have been invented out of thin air.

Perhaps people were getting confused between Iran and Atlantis as quite a lot of people apparently think Iran is an underwater country

General geographic knowledge is bad but this looks very much like something deliberately designed to generate the pre-determined headline.

The results are presented on a map with national borders marked on it but the random scattering of the points strongly suggests the map the respondents had didn’t have those borders. I’d also suggest a significant number of people trolling or not understanding the question given the number of answers in the ocean, USA or Australia. Some people are that ignorant but not that many.

I’m personally not convinced knowing the exact physical location of the country is the key knowledge anyway. I’d much rather people knew about the people, politics and culture of the country than just where it is in the world.

We now interrupt this thread for a brief musical interlude about Iran...

...We now return you to your regularly scheduled discussion.

Kangaroo Feathers

Yea, it is written in the Book of Cyril...
Nope, can't be. We know from Plato that Atlantis was "beyond the pillars of Herakles" (Gibraltar). Atlantis is in the North Sea, the former Doggerland. Doggerland was flooded by a tsunami roughly about the time when Plato described it. The only remain of it s the island Helgoland.
Atlantis - Wikipedia
Nah, Plato was guestimating based on the guestimations of the Egyptian priests. Thera fits.

Yes and I know the history of Iran from the US overthrow of the democratically elected government in the 1950's (we thought they might go communist) to today.
Whew! Another communist threat eliminated. And at very low cost too.

What I don't understand is if we are on the side of democracy and freedom how did we end up supporting so many oppressive dictatorships?

Rome was awesome at it's prime. But it was founded on slavery, it was at constant war, the Romans poisoned themselves with lead, they couldn't keep up intellectually with the Greeks so they abandoned proper education; then they made some questionable decisions in leadership and they let Christianity become a power in politics. Then they went under.
That’s why U.S. = awesome, not Rome. :p

If Trump orders any Atlantian generals killed, let me know and we'll talk about it.
