A Question For Forum Members

It seems that there is a little discord among members of this forum and in this country about the killing of the leader of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which is a designated terrorist organization. However we didn't see much discord over the killing of Osama bin Laden. Farqua Qatani, Abu Muhammad Adnani, Hafiz Saeed Khan, Rahman Mustafa Qaduli, Abu Nabil, Mohammed Emwazi, Mhusin Fadhli, Ali Awni Harzi, Mokhtar Belmokhtar, Adan Garar, Adam Gadahn, Hakimullah Mehsud, Malvi Nazir, Abu Yahya al Libi, Sakhr Taifi, Abdul-Rahman Awiaki, Ibrahim Banna, Anwar Awlaki, Atiyah Abdul Rahman, LLyas Kashmiri, Abdallah Umar Qurayshi, Sheik Said Masri, Hussein Yemeni, Baitullah Mahsud,
Just wondering what the difference is?

the killing of Osama bin Laden

This happened in 2011... are you sure you are remembering the sentiment of RF'ers accurately?

But beyond that, I'm not sure that this is an apples to apples comparison.

Not sure about most of these people or even if there was much of a reaction at all to their killings - positive or negative. However, I do recall there were some criticisms over the killing of Bin Laden, as some believed he should have been captured alive and taken to trial.

Is there much of a difference? Probably not. Killing is killing.

I have no truck with Suleimani, not a nice man.
BUT it is the consequences of actions like this. It was the same when Bush / Blair invaded Iraq.
No one has thought it through; what happens next? Do we have a Plan B, C & D to ensure it ends there.
Did Trump expect so many Iranians to be on the street; did he expect the Iraqi reaction?
Why did Trump not inform his 'allies' (If he has any left)?

So, no problem with the assassination if there is a follow up plan and the repercussions are known. Those you list (can't say I remember them all) but have any led to such a reaction. Ever the likes of Tucker Carlson, one of Trumps mates, has laid into him.

If you consider for a moment what the potential consequences are from assassinating the effective No 2 person in a hostile state of 80 million people, as compared to the consequences of killing these others, you may, just possibly, be able to discern a difference.

There is no different, in my view killing is always wrong. Criminals should be in prision, not be killed

which is a designated terrorist organization.
Is supposed to mean something? Some would say that the IDF are terrorists. We don't even designate KKK or neo-Nazi groups as terrorists even when they're responsible for most of the domestic terrorism in the US. So that don't mean much to me. It's just a political thing.

In politics there are good reasons... and then real reasons.

The good reasons are the ones that are publicized, the real reasons remain unspoken.

Sure, if the individual is a threat, then, it makes sense to mitigate the threat, and that's a good reason.

But if an election is coming, start a war... that's the real reason behind this. It's 6 months before the election.

There are two significant differences.
  1. The possible scope and magnitude of intended and unintended consequences.
  2. The fact that we have a grossly ignorant, pervasively cruel, pathological liar with zero impulse control pampering his sick narcissistic ego and wholly unworthy of our confidence -- a President who is now boasting of his willingness to engage in war crimes by targeting cultural targets.

There is a certain level of relativity involved here. Other than Osama bin Laden himself, I have not heard of any of the people listed in the OP prior to now. This includes never having heard of the Iranian general that we recently assassinated.
However, a quick look reveals that most of the names in the OP our members were ranking members of Al-Qaeda.

One must keep in mind that Al Qaeda has always been a small minority branch of extremist and militantly violent Islamic operatives. Similar to imagining the KKK or neo-Nazis in America continuing to carry out their various domestic terrorist activities falsely in the name of Christiansity.
Now expand this thought experiment with some support from conservative Christian members of our government. Now imagine if the KKK took a few trips internationally to proactively bomb peaceful Islamic sites in other countries.
If those other countries then went into Georgia and Alabama and Mississippi and killed those KKK members, yes we would be upset. But not nearly as upset as if four-star generals in the current United States military forces were targeted by drones and assassins from other nations.

The KKK members regardless of US government support are still ****-for-brains racist scum who are better off dead anyway. The four-star generals, we actually respect (regardless of any personal failings within their brains) even if they have carried out support of the KKK attacks, or lead military missions outside of our borders.
Similarly our response to a drone strike from another country into the Pentagon is going to be different than blowing up a bunch of cross-burning, white sheet wearing racist scum in some remote Mississippi bayou. (personally, in the latter situation I would be torn between joy, and a little concern/upset that our own military had not done it earlier. ;)).

So ask yourself....if you were an Iranian citizen right now, what would you think of the US assassination of one of your nation’s lead generals? And what would you want your nation to do about it?
(on top of the fact that the US has been killing your freak religious extremist (citizens) inside and outside your nations borders for years).
