Happy Krampusnacht!

WWMRD?
Tonight is the night of Krampus, the wild beast that captures bad children, beats them with sticks, and takes them to his lair to be eaten (Gryla will collect the rest later) Here in the states Krampus has made a lot of in roads in the past few years and here in my neck of the woods and they are hosting a Krampus pub crawl with costume contests etc. It seems unseasonably warm so we may see more than a few females with suggestive costumes, It will be a good night.

I had forgotten all about that. It doesn't seem to be a thing around here

Okay this genuinely triggers me.
You don't live in the Alps so stop doing this.

Oh god. Why do you Americans ruin everything?

Also "Krampusnacht" is literally not a thing.

Skanky Old Mongrel!
So this Krampus beats and eats brats?
We could benefit from some (a lot of) visits from Krampus around here.
But such creatures don't worry brave ol' badger..... I'm 71!! :D

And I like the idea of lots of ladies dressed 'interestingly', only it's bloody freezing here and floods everywhere.

Enjoy your celebrations.....

Hear hear. They take a European tradition, distort it out of all recognition and then re-export the resulting schmalzy and commercialised version all over the globe. This has happened to both Christmas and Hallowe'en. I would not be surprised if the same happens with other religions - though when they get round to schmalzifying and commercialising Ramadan, I'll be grudgingly impressed. ;)

Keep in mind though, Halloween and Christmas are the result of immigrants adapting their cultures upon arrival to America and adding their own unique traditions to the "melting pot."

This is how religions persist: through adaptation and syncretism.

I do agree the commercialization process is ridiculous, though. Especially with Christmas.

You should be thanking us for preserving (and enhancing) your culture. :D

Yesterday quite a lot of children in the Alps went home with actual bruises on their legs, butts and sometimes torso. Something tells me that this doesn't happen in the US and if it did the police or a parent would shoot people dead.

That shows the ingenuity and cleverness of us Americans, the vast majority of us are descendants of European immigrants who brought those traditions over here then we turn around and sell it back to the old countries and they eat it up -hahahaha

Like pizza, which we took, perfected, and then returned via franchised chains.

I'm surprised we haven't appropiated Guy Fawkes day yet. We already celebrate St. Patricks day and Cinco de Mayo as excuses to drink and party with most not knowing or caring about the original point.

It's true. They complain about the presence of U.S. fast food chains in their countries, yet they wouldn't be there without demand to sustain them.

The Catholics would probably kick up a fuss, though. 5th November is a festival celebrating the defeat of a terrorist plot, hatred towards the participants and by extension their religion. It has played a part in keeping anti-Catholicism going in English popular consciousness for several centuries. It's a bit dodgy - though few people care nowadays of course.
