Is there a study of belief?

I'm interested in all things religious, mythological and historical.

I was wondering if there are any academic fields that study the issue of belief throughout multiple disciplines, psychology obviously being one of them since this is a psychology sub forum

I know Jung was very influential and was wondering if any others have continued his work.

‘Programming and Metaprogramming In The Human Biocomputer’ by Dr John Lilly.

Close. :D Centre Of The Cyclone. It's surprising that I still seem to have so many books from that era - but then I do hate to get rid of books rather than so many other things.

Damn ! I must be getting senile.

You still have Centre Of The Cyclone ? I was (am) a big fan of Dr Lilly. I admire him for his audacity in deciding to make a scientific study of consciousness. He was a pioneer.

I read The Human Biocomputer when I was a teenager, and it influenced my life in a big way.
He also pioneered human-dolphin communication. He shut the program down and released the dolphins when the US Navy wanted to dissect their brains !

Unfortunately he lost his credibility in the scientific world when he revealed that he was taking ketamine in his isolation tank and ‘fusing with the group mind of the dolphins’.

Some things are best kept to yourself.

Same goes for primate language research perhaps. If I had had different friends, or at least certain opportunities, I might have been tempted with such things as LSD or other stuff but it didn't happen. Reading about such from various authors didn't motivate me either. Had one friend who tried LSD and his detailing such also didn't enthuse me. The book is the original Paladin paperback version from 1972/73. Can't but admire him for doing such research though.

PS The price of the book was 50p. :D

PPS I also apparently have The Human Biocomputer, three books by Arthur Janov, and a few by R D Laing and David Cooper. I assume I read them all at the time (usually did), unlike now where I have several on the go - The Silence of Animals being current and half read. :D

I haven't moved forward to see what cognitive scientists have been doing with EEG and such but a classic early work is William James' The Variety of Religious Experience which is a book he wrote summarizing his findings regarding his study of behavior and psychology associated with religion.
