Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said that Donald Trump's recent letter to him broke with "diplomatic and political courtesy."

The letter "was not in line with diplomatic and political courtesy. We will not forget this lack of respect. This is not a priority for us. But when the time comes we would like it to be known that we will take the necessary steps."

Erdogan says Turkey will take necessary steps against Trump's 'disrespectful' letter

-- None of this makes a whole lot of sense.

Of course it does. Trump is taking credit for fixing a problem that he himself created in the first place. Typical. What really worries me, what is he doing while all the attention is on this particular situation.

So Erdogan got his feelings hurt...
I am doubtful this had any impact on Turkeys long made military plans and preparations.

You are right. Trump has had no impact. When the Troops were with the Kurds in Syria their presence there had an impact, but they are gone now.

No military impact, no diplomatic impact. Trump has so weakened the American position that the no longer have any impact at all.

Perfect. Unfortunately.

So the US is weaker than Turkey and has truly become, in the words of a National Review piece a "pitiful helpless giant"under Trump

We were warned of getting into foreign entanglements, we are disengaging now in Syria at least for the time being.
I have posted before the declassified versions from the CIA's own website showing that for at least 25 years they wanted to involve the U.S. military in Syria and it was stated in those documents that it was in seen in the interest of the U.S. to destroy them "by any means necessary" which most likely includes training and arming militias and guerilla groups, the same M.O. that has been used in many countries that the U.S. wanted to stick a big red, white, and blue ding-a-ling into. What I find interesting is that there are many who before claimed the U.S. meddles in the affairs of the ME and we should get out of illegal and immoral wars, some of those very same people now are claiming it's wrong to disengage.

A national review opinion piece?
I don't see getting out or staying out of wars unless we are directly in danger as being weak, I see it as a big dog that sits on a porch and moves only when it needs to. Does the phrase "Speak softly and carry a big stick" ring a bell?

That is hardly the point. There were many possible paths out of Syria. Trump went out of his way to choose one of the most disastrous ones conceivable.

It's exactly the point, whether disastrous or not remains to be seen. Meanwhile, we are lessening our meddling in the ME. It wasn't that long ago that Uncle Sam was urinating all over a number of countries in South America supporting and training groups involved in some pretty nasty war crimes not to mention supporting dictators and criminals but we tend to forget those things. What were the government organizations that were behind promoting these actions? They openly admit it on their own .gov site though chosen declassified documents. The very same people that were behind our involvement in Syria were behind it, we just needed an excuse for a more open engagement.

Denying denialists will deny, I suppose.

But they should not. This is serious business and Trump's blunder is so serious that even I find myself now wondering if he did not act under Putin's orders.

The link locked up my computer. Caused some issues.

Really? Hmm.
I do not know if I had my ad blocker on for that site. I once had the same thing happen to me from a very reliable recipe site. It probably was not the site itself it is more probably someone that bought an ad space and abused that privilege. The recipe site where that happened to me asked me politely to turn off my ad blocker to support their site and I had no problem with that. Unfortunately someone did not screen their ads well enough. I did not click on anything when it happened, nor did I click on anything on the site from your link. It was probably tripped by a mouse roll over.

What drove me nuts was that the recipe site had no clear way to contact them to tell them of their problem. Ad block went back on and stayed on and there have been no problems since.

Probably best to just google "Trump letter Turkey" and pick your link.

I read a bit of it before I tripped the attack. Again, probably a mouse roll over. I got the gist of it. And who woulda thunk it. Cowboy diplomacy does not make our allies feel good.

I also went back to your source, taking a small chance since I knew that the same ad was unlikely to repeat, and turned ad blocker back on and wrote a message to The Independent explaining what happened.
