How to deal with rejectors of medicine

Active Member
Believers who believe in God more than medicine. Who are sceptical about the scientific findings as well as the capabilities and the information doctors possess.

People who may say things like:
  • "If God loves you, you won't get sick"
  • "you are ill because you have sinned"
  • "if I am ill it is because God wants me to be ill."
  • "I am a good Christian /jew/muslim/other, therefore I am in good health"
  • "God will cure you if you obey him and repent"
  • "I don't need to see a doctor. If God wants me to get better, He will cure me"
  • "medicine is no good because only God can cure an illness"
  • "God wants to punish me, I can't take medicine for the pain. I must endure it so that He will forgive me."
What to do if and when you have such a person in your life, more or less? It may be a person who is sick and refuses proper treatment or a person who makes another feel unnecessary guilt and shame on top of perhaps encouraging them to not seek proper treatment.

If an adult refuses to take medication because of their crazy religious beliefs that is up to them. However, if they refuse it on behalf of their children that is a very different matter. In the UK JWs, for instance, can be taken to court if they refuse to let their child have a blood transfusion.

I guess this stuff is a derivation of Creationism...the belief that a God designed us or created us.

Intelligent design is just Creationism in disguise.

In response to all of this, because they are a 'believer', I would refer them to the Book of Job. Health and Happiness are not a measure of divine favor.

You're not wrong but I think a more accurate context would be to say that any parent can be taken to court if they refuse to let their child receive necessary medical treatment, regardless of the basis of their objection.

I agree. I was just using the JWs as an example because a couple of those doorstep nuisances told me our adopted son, who has Down's syndrome, would have been better of dead rather than having a life saving blood transfusion when he was 16 months old!

God gave us minds which led to science and medicine. To reject medical knowledge and treatments is to therefore reject a gift of God.

That was no gift from a god, which probably doesn't exist. Human intelligence has evolved over the centuries and this has lead to the development of science and medicines.

For adults I have no problems.

For kids I would seek medical treatment until they are considered adults.

Are simply brain damaged. God and medicine should not being opposing one another, and they do not, its the brain damaged people that say and act on silly things like that.
That's your opinion of them. Even if not a medically correct one. But how would you deal with one if you had to?

Depends on who that person is

Coworker: Not my problem and won't care

Close friend: Talk to them and try every possible way to convince them to take the medicine since it will help them

Son/Daughter(Child): Talk to them and if they continue to resist then ultimately force them if possible.

Wife (pre-pregnancy) : Talk to her and try my hardest convince then, if she resists, divorce her crazy *** or if i am successful, wait till she's better than divorce her because that ***** is crazy and would only harm my kids.

I hope i answered your question.

There is no evidence that the intelligence of man has changed since the neanderthals.
