I would like to hear the U.S. Customs side of the story. It is not that easy to cross accidentally up there the last time that I checked.
Yes, but it does sound incompetent.
Then to move them to a detention centre in Pennsylvania and split the family up. The US are going back to the 18th Century.

Special Relationship my ar$e

If there was a wall, nobody could "accidentally" wander into US territory. /s

You want another wall on the Canadian border?

Trump is already cutting the US military to build the wall across the Mexican border.

I am sorry, but once again it makes little sense. Trust me that is not an easy mistake to make. It is not even a possible mistake for most of the border up there. I have seen it. Roads as a general rule do not simply to through. The fence is minimal, but you could not accidentally drive your car through it. And then to fly them from the West coast almost all the way to the east coast? I think there is more to this story.

... and I'm sure we'll hear it soon enough

WWMRD?
Probably spies, what better cover than "we're a family". It's the same ruse Jehova witnesses use when they go door to door, some waterboarding of the little ones will get to the bottom of it.

What raised my suspicions was that roads simply do not go through, except at well marked border crossings. Even Point Roberts has only one road in and out. I will be the first to admit that what happens on our southern border is messed up, even when they are illegal immigrants. But accidentally crossing the border does not seem possible in the northern part of my state. At least not in a car. In the Cascades the border may not be fenced. But there will not be any roads in those areas.

There may be more to the initial "border crossing" than the one sided reporting implies, i dont know the area.

However i have had the misfortune to face US border protection at airports on a couple of occasions. As has several people i know who confirm my opinion. I can say with hand on heart that US customs and border protection personel are the most obnoxious, power crazed bunch of little hitlers I have ever been faced with?

This is saying something profound considering i have, in the past had 6 Kalashnikovs cocked and pointed at me for tripping a metal detector at what was an eastern bloc airport.

Doesn't look that difficult to me from this streetview, there's nothing but 1 meter of grass: Canada looking into America

As elsewhere noted, we dont know the circumstances.
Accidentally crossing a border is certainly possible.

And, of course, just who you are, and what you are carrying,
and how you act will do a lot to determine how charitable
the border agents are going to be.

It might be well for our jump-to-conclusion people to
have their own experience with people jumping to
conclusions about them.

That was probably a brown pants moment.

Guess I have been too timid to be travelling in
such places!

One of my first business trips and thingswere a still bit fraught between east and west at the time. It was a joint military/civilian airport, first time i had seen armed soldiers patrolling an airport (see it all the time now). Metal detectors were in their infancy and rather more sensitive than they are today. Several years before i had broken my arm which was held together with a small silver pin. Over time the pin would disolve but hadn't then.
