Should DNA testing be required when a child is born?

This is, ahem, an argument for the old fashioned sexual morality that sex occurred only inside the marriage bond. It would reduce not eliminate the problem, people being people.

That isn't even required. At least get to know and gain some knowledge about the individual. For one are they employed? If no, run don't walk. Having a least a standard besides having a heartbeat

This makes no sense. Splitting the costs of raising a child doesn't leave either parent better off financially than if they hadn't had the child.

Apparently you're not familiar with the inner workings of the system. As someone who deals with the impoverished community, there are women who refuse to work, live on the county and put men on child support. There is no "splitting the cost." There are women who sell food stamps out here to get money, deny men access to their children out of spite because the man decides to move on. Trust me it gets deep out here.

There may be some people who would actually like to be a Dad to the kids even if they are not the father.

True. But when it comes to child support I think it ought to be mandatory considering that there exists the possibility that a woman could have multiple partners who could be potential fathers.

I agree. I believe DNA testing ought to be mandatory for child support cases such as what this guy did.
Wasn't it too late for him? One thing that has happened is if a guy has been on the hook for a while it is not very easy to get off. Judges tend to focus more on the rights of the child than on the rights of the guy who was not the father. I do agree that now that DNA testing is cheap and easy there is no excuse not to. For the protection of both the father and the mother. If the "father" is not the father then he does not get stuck paying a bill that he should not pay. It protects the mother because if he is the father there is no doubt about it.

From the looks of the video initially it sounded like he accepted the responsibility and started buying clothes for the child. My main thing is, once a person is vindicated, can they get the money back?
Probably not. That would make the child a victim of his mother's bad behavior. Sometimes past wrongs cannot be righted, but in today's day and age one would be foolish not to get such a test.

Take a look at this example. The man did not even know that he was supposedly the father, and he wasn't, and the state still wants child support payments:

Perhaps it would be wise to save up a supply in case one wanted a kid and then get a vasectomy. It is just too dangerous out there for guys today.

If the guy wants to financially support the kids and be a dad to them with parental rights regardless of whether he is the biological father or not, should the DNA testing be forced on them? Should he have to go through a formal adoption if he turns out not to be the biological father? For instance, let's say a married couple had a child where the wife had an affair and got pregnant, but the husband stayed married to her and raised the child as his own. Twelve years later, the couple gets a divorce. The husband still wants to be a dad to the child and will voluntarily pay child support. Should DNA testing be forced on them? Should he have to formally adopt the child to retain parental rights?

The case law on that is clear. He is the "father" whether he wants to be or not. Even simply being married can be enough to make the husband responsible for child support. As a precautionary act a single man that is with a woman that has "his child" needs to get that kid tested before he is stuck with an eighteen year debt.

Well, if he knows he's not the biological father and raised the child as his own during the marriage, and continues to want to be a Dad to the child, and agrees to child support and custody arrangements, should DNA testing be forced upon them?

No one is advocating that.

I'm open to the idea of the option but I think considering the nature of infidelity and promiscuity when it comes to state government involvement especially when it comes to monetary payouts i think it should be mandatory regardless if one is willing to be a father. However, one could opt out of the DNA test and simply sign a document proclaiming responsibility.

I believe there needs to be either a documentation that needs to be signed or some other process that would expedite the process.

Why would a father who chooses to stay in the life of the child want to pay child support despite him supporting the child all the way until divorce? Makes no sense. Why create additional arrangements when you've had a system in place that worked between you and the woman?

At least you are open to an opt out!

You mean make a dead-beat dad the expected norm, and have to sign a document declaring that you are "out of the norm?"

Well, because the state gets involved in child support enforcement, and for tax purposes. If has has that kind of bond with the child, and still wants to be a dad/father figure, why make it more difficult for him to do so? What if he wants to be an emergency contact for the children? What if he is needed to make an emergency decision on behalf of the child in case of a medical emergency? Are people such as this actually that rare? Say it isn't so!

No. But I’m sorry more often than not these things happen. It goes both ways. There are women who are unfit to parent and can easily do away with responsibility for taking care of children. I think DNA testing is a sure way to make men and women responsible. As far as signing a document I mean for the purpose of those who are willing to bare the responsibility of taking care of a child even though genetically they are not related.

If there is question of genetic relationship hence the necessary mandate of DNA testing.
