Question for all the atheists on here

If you lift your hand up and put it into the air.You will notice there is nothing inside of the air your hand is touching. So how can everything come from nothing when talking about the milky way galaxy?:confused:And by the way I am not trying to offend you with my question.Just curious is all.:)

Not an atheist but you may rephrase your question. I don't understand what you are asking.
What has air to do with the galaxy?
Why do you think that anything can come from nothing?
And how do you expect to feel anything like moisture and particulate matter with your hand even so the air is full of it?

1.I thought air had no matter to it.
2.I don't i thought atheist thought this about the milky way galaxy.
3.I don't know. You're right.I just thought air would be a good example of nothingness.Because I thought air didn't have matter in between it.

The air you are looking at is full of hand but i dont see what it has to do with events 13.8 billion years ago

First off, Atheism has nothing to do with the start of the universe... Nothing... All Atheism says is its the disbelief or lack of belief in the existence of God or gods.

Next, the Milky Way is just one of over 100 billion (big number) of galaxies that are known, who knows how many outside the known universe.

Next, there are many hypothesis as to how the universe began, all are justified either mathematically or physically? If there is no way to justify the hypothesis it simply does not get off the ground

Next, of those many hypothesis there are a handful that hypothesise the universe sprang from nothing. Here is one of them...
Spontaneous creation of the universe from nothing
The full text can be downloaded from the top right of the page. You will also note that this hypothesis is justified both mathematically and physically by quantum observation

Air is a gaseous mixture of nitrogen, oxygen and around 1% various other gasses. And yes, gas is matter

Air is matter. There is nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, a bit of water, and some other things in air. A roomful of air actually ha a surprisingly large amount of mass. Without this matter in the air, airplanes would not fly and you would suffocate.

Galaxies like the Milky Way formed a fair amount of time after the Big Bang and there was plenty of matter around for them to form from. Ultimately, you are asking about the conservation laws: that the amount of matter and/or energy doesn't change over time. But that law requires time to exist. If time itself has a beginning, there is no issue with violating that law.

You are wrong. Air has matter. Lots of it, in fact.

A roomful of air, say 15' x 20' x 9' has just under 200 pounds of air in it.

(sorry to the metric using friends here)

Simple, Polymath, that would be roughly about a 100 kg in Metric system. That is quite some matter. I would not be able to lift it. :D

Haha, Christine, Atheism has a lot to do with start of the universe. If it does not believe in existence of One or Many God or Goddesses. then it has to explain a few things.
1. From where the matter and energy in the universe has arisen?
2. What was the process of creation (if any) of the universe or universes?
3. How did life came about in the world or the universe or universes?
Atheists cannot get off simply by saying 'There is no God'.

Fortunately, science has very good answers for all these questions. Though I would admit that research has not been completed and closed, but even then, they are much better than the ridiculous answers that creationists provide. :D

Not offended, but also confused. 'Air' is not a vacuum. There is lots of stuff in it, and putting out hand up displaces it.

I know. In fact, I had to convert the number of cubic feet into cubic meters and then use the number of moles in a cubic meter to get my values above.

Why can't the US be like everyone else and start using the metric system????

I would go further and claim that theism has no *real* answers to these questions. Instead, it just says 'goddidit' and avoids the questions entirely.

When humans do things, they use the laws of physics (and chemistry, etc) along with previously existing matter to form what we want. So, I can explain where my chair came from by describing the process by which it was formed from previously existing matter.

But, for example, if I ask how the pyramids in Egypt were formed and someone answered: 'the Egyptians made them', that answers *who* but it fails to answer *how*. And without the details of *how*, the question remains unanswered.

Nope, Atheism need not explain anything other than there is no falsifiable evidence to support god or gods just like there is no falsifiable evidence to support pink unicorns.

Everything else is just fluff that people inject to attempt to discredit atheism.

For most of the world, a cubic meter of air has a mass of about 1.3 kilograms.

(I am assuming standard temperature and pressure).

I grew up with both, although the UK was officially metric by the time i came along my early childhood was plagued by weights given in both imperial and metric.

So i am equally bad at both

This is of corse, "Atheism has nothing to do with the start of the universe...", what atheists tells other people to sort of lead the origins of the universe away from the atheistic viewpoint.
They hope one will perceive the atheist seperate from "atheist scientific models" on the origins of the universe.
Well, lets be straight forward.
The whole excercise of discussing the origins of the Universe, is an atheist domain where everyting will be done to prove it spontaniously came into existance.
However, the Atheist will not like the Christian claim of, Yes, God made it out of nothing, and we knew it 2 000 years ago!

Nope, they have to give the most silliest explanations on how it came into existance without creation.
Just like Stephen Hawkins claimed that everything spontaniously errupted due to Gravity!
Therefore, even hawkins had to create a creator to create everything. gravity in the place of God.
I loved it when John Lennox said of Stephen's theory:
"Nonsense remains nonsense, even if spoken by a genius!"

This story about a spontanious erruption from monopoles and false bubbles in other bubbles originates from Zeeya Merali who composed her writings by combining different scientists' work.

Now, she took studies from Andraie Linde and Sakai and other theoretical phycisists, and showed us what the scientists nou came up with.
  • We should form a vacum in space.
  • inside this vacum false vacums will appear.
  • Then we must build very large colliders and get a monopole.
  • in this false vacum, the monopole will now increase in size.
  • We dont know how long it will take, but if we sit and wait a long time, it might happen.
  • Oh, but it might fall into itself, therefore we need a cosmic string.
  • Well, if we can get one, this bubble will inflate indefinately.
  • But the funny thing is, it will remain the same size from the outside, but if you are on the inside, it will grow as big as our universe.
  • This Universe will be connected with ours, through a wormholw, and eventually will sever itself.
  • AAAWWWW, but damn, this whole event will happen so fast that we will not even see it happen.
it ends off with the following words:
"Just imagine if we can do this, then we will be god!"

Now, if any person can believe in the above fools fibb, then I can understand why intelligent people believes in other fairytales such as evolution.

Please dont try to tell me Atheism has nothing to do with explanations of the origins of the Universe!
they have attempted to find an alternative to God for 200 years without success.

Nope. It is a *scientific* domain where we use what we have learned from science to explore the possibilities concerning the beginning of our universe.

However, the Atheist will not like the Christian claim of, Yes, God made it out of nothing, and we knew it 2 000 years ago!

What *evidence* do you have for the claim that it was all made by some deity? Also, by what process did that deity make it?

You have answered nothing.

Nope, they have to give the most silliest explanations on how it came into existance without creation.

I assume John Lennon was an expert in quantum gravity? No? How about you? No? Then how do you know what is and is not possible in quantum gravity?

If you went back a century, a bomb with an explosive power of a million tons of TNT would have been considered silly. But, when we learned the possibilities of releasing nuclear energy, such became not only possible, but a real thing.

This is *one* of the many possible scenarios for how the universe formed. And the question is whether it is consistent with what we know of physics, NOT whether it jibes with your intuitions.

And, the evidence for evolution is far, far, far better than the speculations concerning the beginning of the universe.

Please dont try to tell me Atheism has nothing to do with explanations of the origins of the Universe!
they have attempted to find an alternative to God for 200 years without success.

Don't confuse atheism with science. Scientists have been able for about the last century to model the universe as a whole. It wasn't until the mid 60's that we discovered the cosmic background radiation. it wasn't until this century that we have been able to measure that radiation in enough detail to answer a number of long-standing questions.

In comparison, what has your 'God Hypothesis' managed to actually explain, predict, or model? Nothing.

Why are you asking this to atheists?

It seems to me that it's a better question for all the theists who believe their God came from nothing (and then everything else came via God).

Actually, my hand is touching a lot of microscopic things. A probably incalculable number of subatomic particles.

So how can everything come from nothing when talking about the milky way galaxy?
I don't believe I've ever heard any atheist claim everything came from nothing.

In any case, may I ask you what exactly "nothing" is, and what you know about it? Are you certain that something cannot come from nothing? From our own studies, we know that quantum particles blip in and out of existence uncaused constantly.
