Diplomatic Immunity?

Shad

Fair enough.
But in some 'risky' countries a diplomat's family does need special protection, either that or they stay home and safe.
But here in Blightly families are fairly safe from our wicked government. :)

Our PM is going to appeal to Washington.

Keep the family at home in their own nation or decline the position in my view

If you copy/paste them in to Google they will offer connection.

Yeah, some diplomatic posts are in very very dodgy countries. North Korea or Iran might be good examples.

Nation does not really matter to me. The immunity is for the purpose of communication and safe passage between nation-states which can be hostile towards each other. Non-reps do not require such immunity as they have no such duties. The nation could be the UK like this story. Doesn't matter to me. A rep's wife has no business being granted immunity.

At present it covers a whole family, but when and if you get to be leader of your country, then you can do something about it.... :D

Update.....

It seems that the US government has not responded to requests made by the UK's Home Secretary for the Diplomat's wife to return to the UK to answer questions about the fatal road accident, where it is believed that she was driving her Volvo motor car on the wrong side of the road.

The Daily Mail has reported today that she had been convicted of a driving offence before this incident, in the USA, although more details were not shown.

Our PM is saying that if this matter is not resolved that he will make communication direct to Washington about this.

The Daily Mail reports that previous to this, after a request made by the USA the Brit Government withdrew diplomatic status from a Brit diplomat so that he could be arrested and tried in the USA for being involved in Domestic incident..

Hence why this problem came up. She is getting immunity without any of the responsibilities that come with the office.
The situation seems to be escalating.

I have read that her husband might be a CIA officer, because of the location where the crash occured, near a military air base.

That was in one of the articles you linked.

This just furthers my point that immunity has become absurd.

I do acknowledge your point.
We will just have to watch how things go, moving forward with this particular incident.

I expect public outcry but nothing of substance regarding this case. At best the UK/US will look at it's deals for non-staff immunity for the future and throw some money at the victim's family. I doubt the US will extradite her nor will the UK government actually press the issue besides for optics.

If the young man's family could receive a serious apology and a very high restitution/compensation payment then let these governments have their 'no integrity' games.

I just think of the bereaved family at this time.

Well the problem here is the UK isn't voiding the deal which granted her immunity nor is the US extraditing her. So money is about all that is on the table besides doing nothing at all for the victim or their family.

It is possible that Britain could be out of the EU soon, with no deal, disrupted trade and transport, a reduced £, and on serious need of a sweet trade deal with the USA. I cannot see our PM getting stroppy with the USA.

How messed up is that?

Well the Anglo-American alliance has been one of, if not the, the strongest and longest lasting alliances in modern history. That is even with the UK joining the EU. It would be in UK interest in general to expand upon the existing alliance and treaties. The only difference I see is how the UK deals with the EU and individual members. That is the breaking point if isolationist take change. Although I think it will be a middle-ground point with people arguing over details.

Yes.
And since we need to get very close with USA at this time, any tough talk over a motoring offence (however serious) seems to be a diplomatic dead duck.
The family of the killed motorcyclist are saying that they got fobbed off by a representative of our foreign office. They believe that they have been dumped.

What a dreadful sad business. If that teenaged motorcyclist had been son of a minister, etc, how differently things might be. There's nothing fair about life, or death, it seems.

They were dumped. This woman will face no consequences from a court of law

The elite would probably let it slide as well. They let the royals slide all the time.

Update:-

BBC News is reporting that President Trump wishes to speak to Mrs Sacoolas about the Road Traffic Accident.

Whatever that might mean, I do reckon that Mrs Sacoolas has caused a massive amount of embarrassment for her country, and this could possibly be felt in ways that we will never know about.

I just hope that a serious level of restitution and compensation will be extended to the motorcyclist's family.
