Pleasure Marriages in Islam

Most might not be able to access this, but it deals with apparent 'Pleasure Marriages' in Iraq:

BBC iPlayer - Undercover with the Clerics: Iraq’s Secret Sex Trade

To summarise, undercover reporters posed as those seeking short-term marriages (often known as pleasure marriages, and lasting from hours to a day perhaps and then annulled) - which seemingly is ordained by some Islamic Clerics (for money) - and where the ages of any females can be nine years and above - as long as sexual activities were restricted. I won't go into the details but restricted hardly means what it should and most elsewhere would regard what happens as child rape - and prostitution - or simply child sexual abuse.

Any comments on this, and is it apparently allowed via the Qur'an - that is, temporary marriages?

I also saw that same BBC documentary. This particular religious practice has been going on for centuries. It is in fact defacto prostitution. All of these current wars has now brought this religious practice to the public at large. If you have read and studied the Quran and Hadith this religious practice blends perfectly in a society dominated by the desert and feudal mentality. If I were to free to do so, I could list many sexual transgressions found in the Hadith, including the most famous one, when Mohammed married a 9 year old year girl. Hopefully, like the Catholic Church, Islam will renounce these religious practices and reform itself.

Islam is the youngest of the Abrahamic religions. It is behind in everything. Present Christian fundamentalism wants a return to the old ways, yet with most schisms the Christian religion seems to be evolving to embrace progressive stances. Judaism seems to be the only one that never really had any issues.

The "Spiders of Allah" revealed the tightest Muslim security state can't and won't do anything about prostitution. They pretend to have any morals from their office of Morals and Religion, in Iran. The Title is a little underwhelming. So the Taliban I think, were surrounded and sieged, and US forces had a video tape of getting bit or harassed by "Camel spiders" I think? And they had Spiders of Allah posters in town.

The claimed "sexual transgression" between Muhammad and a nine year old girl is not supported by the Qur'an. Also, respectfully, your assertion that sexual transgressions blend perfectly with "desert and feudal mentality" needs evidence, otherwise, it sounds like bigotry. Feudalism and living in the desert are not correlated with pedophilia.

( BTW: The reform you are hoping for requires correcting the record on these issues. )

Since BBC does not allow the video to be viewed outside the UK, would you please locate another source that reflects your position on this?

I never said the Quran. I said the Hadith, the second most venerated book of the Islam Faith. I never accused Mohammed of being a paedophile. You brought the subject up!

Aisha was born before the Call so she would have been ten years older... like 19.

Spiders of Allah is a ground-eye view of the Iraq war from an embedded reporter with The Times of London. Although the book purports to offer an atheist's perspective on the religious motivations behind the war, this only comes through in the last couple of chapters.

Look, if you want reform, the talking point about Muhammad and a nine year-old needs to be retired. The Qur'an is ultimate written authority in Islam. If a sexual relationship between a man and a nine year old is prohibited in the Qur'an then that supersedes any Hadith. The supremacy of the Qur'an over all other scripture is a core value in Islam. Besides, if you look at the wiki Luis just posted, these "pleasure" marriages exclude "young virgin girls". So, if the wiki is correct, the whole Muhammad/Aisha affair is irrelevant.

Most Hadiths came from Persia 200 years AFTER the death of Muhammed. They tend to reflect tribal customs moreso than Islam.

This appears to be about the same programme:

All Muslims I know have been married to the same person for many years.
I've read a lot of the Quran and I don't recall reading anything about "pleasure marriages" or "short term marriages", Which verse are you referring to, exactly?
