Gnostics classified three types of human souls. Hylic - materialist, pneumatic - spiritual and psychic - soul type.
Soult type is one in question, this one is capable going either way, to material or spiritual direction. Paul mention two types, soul and spiritual in his 1Cor 2 because that are important in relation to God.
"14The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. 15The spiritual person judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one. "
the Prodigal Son - is a metaphorical story .
Cast:
Father - God
Older son - pneumatic, always stayed with the Father, what belongs to the Father belongs to him.
Younger son - psychic, can stay with the Father but choses material world.
Citizen of that country , who owns land and pigs.
Younger Son first choses material world then ran in troubles and returns to the world of his Father, repented.
Note what the Father says: 24for" this son of mine was dead and has come to life again;" - that is resurrectio of the (spiritually) dead is.
The struggle is to turn psychic nature into spiritual, that is the purpose of Christianity.

There are all sorts of reasons why one might say , or have the idea, that deity is necessarily formless, it's usually because that is what is taught, [just a teaching, so one perceives it, so forth.

A common mistake, and actually not a good mistake. One entity that some perceive as deity, the actually or seemingly formless entity, that invades your space, isn't a good entity. So, there is a big problem with your ideas, just noted. Thusly, calling that 'spiritual', is a total mistake.
