Why is male facial hair so widespread these days?

Are guys too lazy to shave these days? Does the ungodly high prices of razor blades have anything to do with it? Is it a form of rebellion?

Up until about the mid-90's, beards were quite rare especially on younger men. Mustaches were fairly common all through the 20th century but clean-shaven men were widespread in America and in Britain.

Nowadays, clean-shaven is the exception and not the rule.

Do you have any idea of the preening and pruning and skill that goes into making facial hair actually look sexy???

Its a fashion statement, fashions change, come and go, what next? Depilated heads? (Oh been done) long hair? (been done), patterns cut into hair? (Been done).

And will no doubt be done again

I think facial hair is dirty-looking and unsanitary. It's also very uncomfortable to wear. I think men look better clean-shaven.

It's obvious. Food gets stuck in beards & stashes.
Men can enjoy a meal long after they've finished it.
Neckties serve the same purpose.
I eschew both as unsanitary.
If I want to enjoy a meal long afterwards, I just have one with plenty'o raw garlic.

A lot of women like beards on men, in my experience - especially country women. Whether they are just in love with the idea of Duck Dynasty, I don't know.

Speaking for myself:

I've had a goatee since I was 18 because I look like a freshly peeled potato without it.

I grew out a full beard a few years ago for a Halloween costume with the plan to trim it back to a goatee after, but my wife liked the full beard so much, she asked me not to shave it off.

You are most welcome to your opinion, do you shave your chest or pubic area or legs? How uncomfortable and insanitary

That’d be an individual thing so wouldn’t impact wider trends. Laziness was essentially my reasoning, I just happened to coincide with the trend (I’ve never been knowingly fashionable  )

Nowadays, clean-shaven is the exception and not the rule.
That’s fashion and isn’t really any different to fashions in clothes, music or furniture. The relevant industries seek to manipulate public opinion through media, celebrities and other trend-setters and are generally very good at it. As a rule, they want trends to change as much as possible so we keep on buying new things. With beards, there’s a whole industry in beard care and therefore it’s in their interest to encourage more people to grow them and change the style. Of course, there is another industry in shaving products which might prefer to push for a clean-shaven fashion. It wouldn’t surprise me if they didn’t work together to try to encourage constant change.

It all boils down to a huge con to get your money but you need to be aware of it to avoid it.

Rationally, it's no more dirty and unsanitary than hair on top of the head. Irrationally, its what one obsessively fixates on that makes it offensive to you, like fixating on seeing women's ankles.

It's also very uncomfortable to wear.
I've never found that to be the case. Have you ever grown a beard? It's no more uncomfortable than hair on top of the head.

I think men look better clean-shaven.
That is the only rational thing stated. Personal subjective tastes. All this other stuff is not valid. It's no more dirty than hair on top of the head. It's not more unconformatalbe than hair anywhere else on the body, like the arms, legs, back, crotch, arm pits, etc.

Is there are reason you are so fixated on the chin, versus any of those other "growing zones" of the body? Bad experience with a bearded man? You tried to grow one and it came out all weird, and therefore you are not-so-secretly jealous of other men who can grown them, therefore given the power on earth you would ban all other beards so as to not have to come to terms with your personal loss of not being able to have a respectable beard? Everytime you see one, you feel shame, and then turn that into revulsion? Something like that?

I wonder if somewhere deep down at the root of this, or in this case at the follicles, you'll find something inside yourself that is being repressed by you. I say, set that inner mammal free and let it grow, let it grow, let it grow. Oh the culture outside is frightful, let it grow, let it grow, let it grow....

Ask @Bob Jones . He'll tell you it's yet another sign of the insidious march of sharia law and dhimmitude in the Western world.

I bet guys who dislike facial hair are also into shaving their other body parts.
It's a type of perversion.

From me I have to shave daily and I'll have stubble in the evening so I get tired of it and skip once in a while. I have a mustache and grow a goatee in the fall but a full beard is just as annoying as shaving.

WWMRD?
I trim mine during the hotter months and let it grow in the colder months, I don't follow trends but every 10-20 years I'm fashionable again. It never fails

And I think a beard makes you look like Jesus, and that the short-haired, clean shaven look is martial.
Chacun a son gout.

Uncomfortable? I had a full beard most of my adult life. I couldn't tell it was there unless I scratched my chin or looked in the mirror.

Suggestion: Have you considered growing a mane? You'd get all the ladies...

I have had a mustache for the past 40+ years, but I can only grow a pitifully thin and scraggly beard.

However, I love facial hair on men, so long as it's kept trim. I refuse to let my partner shave his beard off, though it's all white now. And I haven't let him shave it off for the past 25 years!
