Given the amount of animosity, anger, gratuitous anger, and other negative emotions and behavior associated with RF's political forums, do you think RF would be a better place without political forums? What say you?

I voted yes. Politics is a big part of our social life and disentangling religion from politics is all but impossible. I won't say it's the most productive of debate forums, but if that's the concern we should have axed the evolution v creationism forum long ago.

I don't care if we lose membership; the number of trolls and lack of religious discussion in favour of political discussion is bringing the forum down. I'd rather have a smaller forum with good members than a large one with mediocre members and trolls all over the place.

I think having separate political forums helps to reinforce the wisdom of the separation of Church and State, even if this reinforcement is on the more subtle (and therefore most effective) level for most people.

Also I want to state that for any non-US members it's a headache. We don't understand half of it and we don't care. There's a huge thread dedicated to Brexit and that's where 90% of people discuss that whole issue. Contrast this to whenever Trump or whoever 'AOC' is does anything, there are at least two new threads about it and I can guarantee that familiar faces will take part and poo will be thrown. It's always the same old.

Even I took part in the Political discussion a lot for some time, i think RF would be better off without the political forum:) and maybe give more focus on the Spiritual part of it

I responded "Yes", although I'm actually ambivalent on the matter.
  • If you get rid of 'em, a couple of folks will have to go elsewhere to vent. I certainly won't miss "the Deplorables".
  • But if you do get rid of the political forums, somebody's going to have whip religious and non-religious Americans into line when a political issue sneaks its way into a religious debate.

If every time Trump/AOC/Biden sneezes/coughs/says something you like/dislike and you feel the need to praise/vent about it, write a blog, keep a diary or something. We can read the news for ourselves, and this is a religious forum. Post religious news.

I have no personal preference either way, as I pretty much ignore them unless I'm forced to go there as a staff responsibility. If they disappeared, it wouldn't break my heart, but I do have concerns from the standpoint of the forum's revenue.

That is easily the dumbest manifestation of petit bourgeois avoidance that I've seen all day1

What do you think makes any forum a success?

People like to peruse through conflict, debate, and cage matches on various subjects. It's what makes everything come alive.

Get rid of all the main events, the attention grabbing topics, and you're going end up with a very dull and boring place like those sites with a posting or two appearing every few months if even that many.

The only advertising left would be advertising for the new ministral show at the playhouse, Ethel's Bridge Club, and Owens poetry corner.

People want forum debate swoothing in literary borne blood!

Pieces of teeth laying on the floor, chairs strewn about. The main event baby!! Popcorn and hot dogs! Yaaaaa!!!!!

And you think religion doesn't do this well enough?

"Revenue"??? Somebody's making money off our posts? or from "contributions"?? Boy-o-boy! I've been naive, haven't I?

The website is free to you, but it's still a business, hence the sponsor advertisements (which premium members don't see :)).

I see 2 ways to view the question....
1) Eliminate political discussion - bad idea.
2) Eliminate separate forums for political discussion - possible.

Just to be safe, I voted "Yes"...keep the political forums.

I think British people should start making new threads every single time PM Johnson or Katie Hopkins or Rees-Mogg makes a new twitter post or does an interview, then perhaps the US people will see how unbelievably annoying and inane it is.
