What does Joseph mean? Does he mean the serpent was a man and slept with Eve, impregnating her?
What does the word serpent actually mean in Hebrew?

I'm intrigued. I have seen some "Christian" sects that teach this. It's called the"serpent seed doctrine". I'm curious to get a Hebrew take on this.

Thank you David.:)
I also started this thread to underline how intriguing and mysterious the apocrypha are.

I believe the 'seed of the serpent' doctrine can be held without the use of the apocryphal books. (Gen. 3:15) "And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed;....." (1 John 3:12) "Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one,...." (John 8:44) "Ye are of your father the devil,...."

Whether it was through sex that a seed line was produced, I don't know. But something occurred at the fall that produced another seed line.

'Now the man knew his wife Eve, and she conceived and bore Cain, and she said, "I have acquired a man with the L-rd."'

'The man' = 'Adam' (lit: man).

I asked what is the Hebrew term for serpent, and if it symbolyzes something or someone.
Since I know no Hebrew, only Ancient Greek.
No, you asked ...

What does the word serpent actually mean in Hebrew?

... and I still don't understand the relevancy of the question especially since the Protoevangelium of James appears to be a mid 2nd Century CE Greek document.

Ok let me ask you this question instead.
Did this James took that sentence (that is that the serpent defiled Eve) from Hebrew mythology or maybe he invented it?

"Serpent seed doctrine"??? Granted, I only spent my first 12 years in Oklahoma and those are not (typically) years that you'd learn about the "serpent's seed doctrine" in Sunday School, I never heard of it. Perhaps, if I hadn't been adopted and moved to Nevada, I'd eventually have learned about it in Adult Bible Study class or by making the circuit through enough churches to come across it.

Intrigued, I looked it up and DANG if there ain't a wikipedia article about it. Serpent seed - Wikipedia

Fancy that! "Christian" porn.

You're wasting your time. He still thinks only a Jew can be "a Hebrew expert" and that's why he's wondering why you'd ask a Jew about a document from non-Jewish apocrypha written in Greek and translated into English.

The Hebrew word for serpent is "nachash" and it also means "man". A&E were given two commandments concerning sex. One positive (Be fruitful and multiply) and one negative (no sodomy). Adam (the serpent) talked Eve into oral sex. As a result of this, Eve became wise (Genesis 3:6) and Adam was cursed (Genesis 3:14).

Thank you so much Susan for the informative, thorough answer.

Are you confusing Adam and Eve with Mary and Joseph?

The Serpent in the Garden of Eden didn't impregnate Eve,

Serpent in Hebrew means snake.

The Hebrew word for "serpent" is nachash. The word nachash can mean serpent and or shiny one. The word, as it appears in Genesis, is "ha-nachash" which means "The Shiny One".

What church reaches that Eve has any kind of sex with the snake?

Yeah, it's out there. The Shepherd's Chapel church out of Arkansas teaches that.
