ArtScroll Tanach

I was considering buying one of the ArtScroll Tanach translations, as I seem to recall someone here (@Jayhawker Soule, I think?) recommended them. That said, might anyone be able to offer guidance re. which edition -- from this page -- to choose? I am a bit tight with money lately, so I'd rather not spend too much on the larger versions (which I believe have more extensive commentary), unless members here believe that they're particularly useful.

Thanks for any advice.

As far as I'm aware all the Stone editions are the same with regard to content, with the only variance being the size of the book. If I were you I'd spend whatever you consider a reasonable amount of money on whichever edition you'd personally prefer. Take into account where you will be reading it, whether you will be carrying it, will you want to make notes &c. Also be aware that Artscroll adds tax at the end of your purchase.

The commonly used Artscroll tanach has very little commentary. The Stone chumash with the 5 books of Moses has more (the Onkelos and the Rashi, plus the notes on the bottom of the page in English). The chumash comes in a couple of different sizes (and there is also the Artscroll in Hebrew, with no English commentary). What kind of experience are you looking for -- that will drive which version and which text you buy.

Thank you. So only the Chumash comes with much commentary? That's slightly disappointing, but of course fine. I think, considering my budget and interest, I'd prefer to buy a full tanach, even with slightly less commentary -- since I'm not Jewish, my interests for the moment run more broadly than deeply.

Unfortunately, I can't read Hebrew, so I'll have to use an English translation.

I consider the Artscroll Stone Edition of the Tanakh to be the very best. Online I use the JPS because it is not copyrighted. But for my own personal reading, it is the Artscroll that I have in my collection.

It should be noted that the JPS translation online is the 1917 translation, not the current translation.

Online as well is the Rosenberg translation of the Tanakh used by Chabad.

For what it's worth, I do not recommend ArtScroll.

Artscroll has different edition of the TaNaKh. Some have commentary and others don’t. They make a series with where each book covers a single book of the TaNaKh along with commentary from a variety of sources. Of course the best commentaries on the TaNaKh are the Talmud, RaShi and Maimonides.

Compare, for example, the various renderings of Deuteronomy 26:5, and tell me what you think.

If we are talking about the entire Tanakh, I like

I’m afraid I don’t have an artscroll to compare with. Or did you mean to tell you what I thought of other translations of that passage?

But thank you for the recommendations! I’ll buy one of those instead.

Just dropping by again also to say ArtScroll isn't my favourite but for another reason; I prefer Koren's English rendering; they also transliterate Hebrew names &c instead of using Gree/Latin and use 1st person singular, which, if you're a grammar-lover, makes way more sense. If you want something with a Hebrew-like syntax, sure use ArtScroll, but for readability and if you're not converting to Judaism any time soon, Koren's English is pretty good.
