An island appears one day from the mists of time after being gone for centuries and centuries, directly between Asia and North America.
The Neanderthals have learned modern farming and medicine, as well as how to build skyscrapers (just because), but being good Taoists, refuse to build too many cities on their island.
Would you be able to teach them enough for them to be considered believers? And what would you teach them if your core beliefs were no good?
Argh, you ppl! They learned how by watching us modern ppl.
So now you are trying to say that a number of years passed between the island appearing and your challenge to teach them a religion. That certainly wasn't clear from your OP scenario. How many years? What other missionary types have already gone there?
It's like pulling teeth.
ETA:
You may have noticed that I have no religious leaders. Since the "neanderthals" already have modern farming, modern medicines and skyscrapers, what kind of "civilizing" are you referring to?But the people into developing the island want it "civilized", and personally your religious leader has suggested you go missionary there.
We all know you don't mean "civilizing", you mean indoctrinating them into your specific beliefs.
In other words, you want these highly intelligent peoples dragged down to your level of superstitious beliefs.
Since these people are so intelligent I think they would quickly see what you and yours are trying to do. They would immediately take their advanced knowledge of medicine and develop a virus that would kill all homo sapiens and leave all other species, including themselves, alive.
Bye bye.
