Changing the world... or maybe not

Today I was waiting for the tram and there was a group of youngsters, looked like early twenties, talking about some deep subjects like having a life with meaning, doing important things to change the world, etc...
I thought to myself that maybe they're smart, and they actually care and there's some potential there.
But then the tram arrived, they got on and left their empty plastic bottles and cups right there on the floor. So much for my positive thoughts... if they couldn't be bothered to put their rubbish in the trash can that was right there, how are they going to do anything positive for the world?

Many talk about changing the world and giving life meaning because talking about it is easy. Far fewer will actually do the more difficult thing and take action.

Being in right earnest is needed. I'm still working on that, but it's my goal. As an India spiritual figure Nisargadatta Maharaj put it:

Earnestly live your truth as you have found it—act on the little you have understood. It is earnestness that will take you through, not cleverness—your own or another's....

Whatever name you give it: will, or steady purpose, or one-pointedness of the mind, you come back to earnestness, sincerity, honesty. When you are in dead earnest, you tend every incident, every second of your life to your purpose. You do not waste time and energy on other things.

Gotta be realistic and do what you can.

I for instance stopped using plastic grocery bags. I have cloth reusable bags for the grocery store.

50% of the power for my home is from wind turbines, soon going full wind/solar combined for 100%.

I don't use toilet paper anymore. Bidet all the way! Saving those forest!

I drive as energy efficient a car as I can.

Gotta start somehere.

Idealistic youth which we've all been at some point but like young squirrels trying to cross the road many go back and forth as if they have no idea what they were doing in the first place, some get run over.
